The Cleveland Guardians optioned rookie outfielder George Valera to Triple-A and recalled Petey Halpin ahead of their series against the Athletics. Halpin is set to make his 2026 season debut after a brief stint in the majors last year.
The Cleveland Guardians made an intriguing move on their off day on Thursday, optioning George Valera to Triple-A.
Cleveland deciding to option the struggling outfielder to the Minors wasn’t too surprising, but the mystery in this decision was that there wasn’t a corresponding move at the time, inducing speculation on what it could be.
The Guardians answered those questions on Friday ahead of their series opener against the Athletics. Cleveland recalled outfielder Petey Halpin from Triple-A Columbus, setting him up to make his 2026 season debut.
This promotion will mark Halpin's second stint at the big-league level. His first taste of big-league action came at the end of last year. The Guardians called Halpin up for his MLB debut last September and recorded two hits in six at-bats.
At the time, Halpin was primarily used as a late-game substitution as a pinch runner or as a defensive replacement in the outfield for the Guardians, which have always been two of the 23-year-old’s primary strengths.

Given that Cleveland has had some costly errors from their outfield over the last few weeks, Halpin’s defense likely played into their decision to call him up rather than another player.
Even though Halpin may be with the big-league club because of his run prevention, he might also be a pleasant surprise in terms of offensive output if he can continue a trend that started a few months ago in Goodyear, Arizona.
Looking back to Spring Training, Stephen Vogt noted that the left-handed hitter made a swing adjustment over the offseason, allowing him to generate some more power and hit inside pitches better. The early returns from that adjustment proved effective, with logging a .922 OPS with a pair of home runs and doubles.

Those numbers haven’t entirely translated to the Minor League season, as Halpin has a .250/.328/.375 slash line through the first 26 games of the 2026 season, but potential remains there, and the quality of at-bat is still strong, too.
There was a real argument to be made that Halpin should be on the Opening Day roster; if he were a right-handed hitter, he likely would have been. Now, Halpin is getting an opportunity to show what he can bring to the big-league team. It may start as a small role, but he could quickly become a valuable asset to the team.
