(Photo by Kelley L Cox/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Athletics giveth, the Athletics taketh away. Former Guardian Aaron Civale and Parker Messick faced off in Sacramento today as the Guardians were looking to sweep the Athletics. Civale held the Guardians down. Going into the fifth inning, Civale held Cleveland to 6 baserunners without a single run scored. Quite the difference from the previous two games. It wasn’t until the top of the fifth that Chase DeLauter got the Guards on the board with a game tying solo shot to left field. Parker Messick had a great start himself. Going into today’s game Messick had only allowed one home run. In the bottom of the second, Messick allowed his second home run, a solo HR to Colby Thomas. For the most part, Messick was dealing as usual. Until the bottom of the fifth when an uncharacteristically high run inning forced Messick out of the game. In the first two batters of the inning, Messick doubled his allowed home run count, giving the Athletics a 2 run lead. Three more singles from the A’s before the final out was recorded but the Athletics up 4-1. Messick finished the day 6H/4R/0BB/6Ks. It was his first loss of the season. Peyton Pallette was unsuccessful keeping the score low. With a strikeout on Lawrence Butler, Pallette loaded the bases with two walks and a single. A double to the far part of right field cleared the bases. Colin Holderman finished the game for the Guardians, pitching the seventh and eighth innings. Holderman allowed 3 hits and struck out 2 batters. Outside of some base runners, the only offense was the CDL solo home run. Travis Bazzana did go 2-for-3 with a walk and DeLauter when 2-for-4 with his home run and a single. The Guardians won this series, but are going into a four game series with the Kansas City Royals who are coming off a strong series of their own against the Seattle Mariners. First pitch in Kansas is tomorrow at 7:40PM EDT.
