NFL fans are continuing to slam New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel after he released a lengthy statement about his relationship with former NYT reporter Dianna Russini. Over the last few weeks, the former athlete became front-page news after he and Russiniâwho are both married to other peopleâwere spotted getting cozy at an Arizona resort. The photos sparked much conversation, ultimately leading Russini to resign from her post.

On Tuesday, April 21, Vrabel broke his silence after photos of him and Russini hugging at a resort pool were shared online. According to PEOPLE, the Super Bowl champion told the media he appreciated their patience amidst the chaos.
In his statement, Vrabel said that while he couldâve addressed the public sooner, he believed it was important for him to connect with those closest to him first, including his players. Continuing, Vrabel admitted to having âsome difficult conversationsâ with other people in his circle over the last few weeks, which have been âpositive and productive.â
âIn order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me. We never want our actions to negatively affect the team, never want to be the cause of distraction,â he said.

Vrabel, an Ohio State alum who later played for three NFL teams, said that he has a lot of respect for his current team before expressing his excitement about the season ahead. Concluding, Vrabel explained that he plans to approach the season with âhumility and focusâ and said doing so had to start with addressing the noise.
According to a previous report from The Blast, Vrabel, who, a source said, spent a night with Russini on the roof of an Arizona resort inside a bungalow, didnât face punishment from the NFL. A league spokesperson said that Vrabelâs behavior didnât violate the leagueâs personal conduct policy, which states league affiliates must not engage in âconduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence inâ the organization.

The photos garnered significant attention and cast a bright spotlight on Vrabel and Russini, prompting the veteran NFL insider to step down from her position at The New York Timesâ sports brand, The Athletic.
âI have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,â Russiniâs resignation letter read. âWhen the Page Six item first appeared, The Athletic supported me unequivocally, expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism. For that, I am grateful. In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts.â
Vrabel also slammed the criticism about him and Russini, stating, âThese photos show a completely innocent interaction, and any suggestion otherwise is laughable. This doesnât deserve any further response.â
While Vrabel likely believed his statements today would put a stop to the speculation, they appear to have only drawn even more focus to the story. On X, one user showed little sympathy for the 50-year-old, writing, âAKAâYes, I cheated on my wife with Dianna. Hopefully my wife doesnât leave me. And Iâm sorry I got caught.â
Another user wrote, âIf those photos showed a âcompletely innocent interaction,â and accusations otherwise were laughable,â like he said in his statement 2 weeks ago, then whatâs the issue here? That responsibility/accountability crap in his locker room culture is dead now. Lying scumbag.â
The heated responses didnât end there. Another user slammed the coach, calling him âGUILTY AS F-CKâ before pointing to his body language. âJust teetering back, canât stand still⊠yeah, he did that sh-t.â
Another passionate user also chimed in, writing, âThis is just non accountability. Doesnât deny any of it so we all know for sure he did something wrong. How about saying I messed up but I am ready to move on and be better. Instead he just says nothing for 5 min.â
The 2026 NFL Draft will start on April 23 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Patriots are set to make 11 of the draftâs 257 picks, according to ESPN, starting with No. 31 in the first round.
