Jasprit Bumrah is one of those very few players in the history of the Indian Premier League who have remained loyal to just one franchise. The charismatic pacer made his debut for MI in 2013 and has remained with the team since then.
In the meantime, he has established himself as India's main bowling force and has grown to become one of the finest fast bowlers in the history of international cricket.
However, one thing that Bumrah could never get at MI was the team's captaincy. For the majority of his journey as an MI player, Bumrah has played under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, who has helped the team lift five IPL titles. Then, in 2024, Hardik Pandya took over the reins from the legendary batter.
Jasprit Bumrah admitted that he hasn't captained in ODIs before, highlighting his inexperience in this role.

On Thursday, May 14, Bumrah finally got the opportunity to lead MI in an IPL game, as he was named captain in the absence of Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav.
Bumrah past the test with flying colours as MI finally ended their losing streak in the ongoing season and beat Punjab Kings by 6 wickets.
Ahead of the game, Bumrah had jokingly mentioned that he never expected to lead the Indian team before captaining MI, a team he has been part of for more than a decade.
Bumrah had earlier led India in the Test format, the most recent one being in the Australia series in 2024-25, where he captained Team India in the first Test at Perth in the absence of Rohit Sharma and then led them again in the fifth Test in Sydney.
After leading MI to a much-needed victory on Thursday, Bumrah admitted that he has fulfilled two of his captaincy goals and now leading India in ODIs remains his only goal, although he claimed that it looks unlikely at the moment.
In a joking manner, in the post-match interaction with the broadcaster, Bumrah said: "Yeah, one from one (smiles). Both teams played good cricket, and we really pulled back well. A little bit, but the wicket in this game looked a little bit drier than the previous one. Maybe it wasn't as cold as it was in the last game. Whatever we saw in the previous game and reading this game, holding your length was key."
"That was the plan, and credit to all bowlers, and they kept their nerve as well. I think Tilak's knock and the way Shardul bowled both deserve equal credit. Tilak kept his shape, Jacks also contributed."
"I have captained a Test match, I have captained T20s, and now the only game left is ODI cricket, but I don't see that happening."
"Jokes apart, very happy. Had good fun, good weather, great ground, so enjoyed my time," hed added.
MI are in turmoil at the moment. Their performance on the field has been nothing short of dismal. Since Pandya took over the reins, MI's performance has been inconsistent as they have failed to make the playoffs in two of the three years, where the all-rounder has led the franchise, including this season.
Pandya's leadership is under the scanner and there have been reports of friction in the dressing room. Considering Bumrah's experience and his acceptability in the team, MI could now seriously consider handing over the leadership duty. Bumrah has well and truly earned the right to captain the team, given his experience and his on-field performance.
