A.J. Burnett knows a thing or two about pitching.
Burnett pitched 17 seasons in the big leagues, three of which came with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates acquired Burnett from the New York Yankees prior to the 2012 season and he quickly became a fan favorite. In his first season in Pittsburgh, the right-hander went 16-10 with a 3.51 ERA in 31 starts. The following season, Burnett helped guide the Pirates to the postseason for the first time in two decades after going 10-11 with a 3.30 ERA in 30 starts.
After a year away in Philadelphia, Burnett returned to Pittsburgh and once again led the Pirates to the postseason. He was named an All-Star for the first time in his career in what was his final big-league season and ended the 2015 campaign 9-7 with a 3.18 ERA.
Burnett keeps tabs on the Pirates in retirement and was around the club for a few days in spring training this year. As expected, Paul Skenes caught his attention.
Skenes, who started two All-Star Games, won the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year and the 2025 Cy Young, has already accomplished a lot in his career. But Burnett thinks the 23-year-old is capable of even more.
âItâs just scary because he ainât even close to prime or peak,â Burnett said of the Pirates ace. âItâs just gonna be fun to watch him.â
Now in his third big-league season, Skenes has already established himself not only as perhaps the top pitching prospect in the sport, but someone whoâs on track to be one of â if not the bestâ pitchers in franchise history.
A.J. Burnett expressed confidence that Paul Skenes is capable of achieving even more and is not yet at his prime.
A.J. Burnett played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball.
A.J. Burnett played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees.
During his time with the Pirates, Burnett helped the team reach the postseason for the first time in two decades.

During Burnettâs tenure with the Pirates, he shared a rotation for two years with Gerrit Cole, who like Skenes was drafted by the Pirates first overall.
Cole was an All-Star with Burnett in 2015 and went on to be part of five more Midsummer Classics and win the 2023 American League Cy Young with the New York Yankees.
Burnett sees similarities between the two.
âTheyâre both bulldogs,â he said. âOne thing I gather from both, and Cole is this way, but it doesnât matter how good they throw, they want to do better the next time out. That was a big thing with Cole. Heâd go seven-strong, like one hit, two hits and one run, and just sit down like, âHow can I go better next time?â I feel like Paulâs the same way. He wants to be better every time out.â
Similarities between Skenes and Cole isnât all Burnett has noticed.
Burnett knows what it takes to turn things around and go from a losing season to the playoffs. The Pirates flirted with the postseason during his first year in Pittsburgh but faded in the second half and finished in fourth place in the division. The next year, the Pirates debuted âBuctoberâ and did so again each of the next two seasons.
The Pirates made several notable additions before the 2013 season, including catcher Russell Martin, left-hander Francisco Liriano and closer Jason Grilli.
This past offseason, the Pirates added a few key pieces including second baseman Brandon Lowe and outfielder/first baseman Ryan OâHearn among others.
With Skenes atop the rotation, he thinks the 2026 Pirates are in a similar spot.
âIt just seems like the pieces theyâve brought in are perfect fits for what they needed, what they didnât have,â Burnett said of this yearâs Bucs. âThatâs what happened with us. We were close in â12, and the guys they brought in were the perfect pieces we needed. Seems to be working out.â
