C.J. Stroud has impressed new Texans OL Keylan Rutledge with his leadership and welcoming approach. Rutledge praised Stroud as a great teammate and leader during their first meeting.
C.J. Stroud is already getting used to hanging out with Houston Texans rookie offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge.
During his introductory press conference, Rutledge told reporters that he's already met several teammates who will take the field at Reliant Stadium with him in 2026. But while most meet-and-greets came on text or over FaceTime, Stroud went a bit further to make sure his new lineman felt welcomed in the Lone Star State for his first visit.
"Stroud came by the hotel," Rutledge said. "We talked for a long time. He's a great human being, first and foremost, but obviously, we all know how he is out there on the grass. He's made of the right stuff. He's a great dude. Just great for him to come up there and take the time to come talk to me.”
One of the biggest things the Texans tried to do this offseason was build a revamped offensive line to protect Stroud following mixed results last season. On top of extending breakout star Ed Ingram, Houston also inked new contracts for Indianapolis Colts' Braden Smith at right tackle and Cleveland Browns Wyatt Teller at left guard.
But the franchise still needed a center. It also must build for the future, especially since several players are coming up for extensions and likely will serve as a priority signing, meaning free agency will take a step back. So Rutledge, regardless of position in 2026, will be a factor for the team's long-term future plans.
Should Rutledge start over Jake Andrews at center come Week 1, he'll need to be in lock step with the franchise signal-caller. So far, it seems like Stroud is make sure to extend the olive branch and ensure his new teammate feels like a part of the crew from Day 1.
Rutledge said he felt like it was just like hanging with one of the boys.
"You can tell he’s a leader. He’s made of the right stuff, so he just wanted to come over and congratulate me," Rutledge said. "He welcomed me, and we just talked about life. Nothing special. Guys being guys, talking ball and wishing me luck. He said, ‘If you need anything, I’m here for you.’ It’s what you want in your quarterback.”
