Head coach burns bridges with friends at Liverpool

One of the Premier League's top head coaches has burned bridges with friends at Liverpool. It likely ends any chances of moving to Anfield.

The i Paper reports that Eddie Howe has 'burned bridges' with friends at Liverpool. The Newcastle United boss has long been close with the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, the CEO of football at FSG and the Liverpool sporting director, respectively.

That friendship dates back to the early 2000s when the group was together at Portsmouth. But Liverpool's pursuit of Alexander Isak last summer has apparently soured things.

The Reds were relentless with their chase, frequently using the media to push further pressure on Howe and Newcastle. Isak went on strike, too, in what ended up being a horrible transfer saga which has since benefitted no party.

And it appears to have had another effect as Howe is not in the running to be LFC head coach anytime soon. Now, his struggles with Newcastle this season likely rule him out anyway but he was in the running - albeit briefly - before Arne Slot took over.

After all, with that long-term friendship to call on, Howe did make a bit of sense back in 2024. Now, though, it seems it's completely off the table should Liverpool opt for a change of head coach anytime soon.
