"So sensational to watch" – Kovač and other coaches react to Bayern's first-leg clash with PSG
Coaches Share Their Thoughts on Bayern's Epic Match Against PSG
West Warwick boys volleyball achieved a significant 3-0 victory over Westerly, marking their dominance in Division II with only three set losses this season. They are on track to secure their first boys volleyball championship, having already reached 10 wins before May 1.
WESTERLY — West Warwick’s regular-season dominance is hinting at history.
The Wizards are technically sound, hungry and chasing a first for the school – a boys volleyball championship. They’ve rolled up everyone in Division II with just three set losses against league opponents this spring.
The Wizards have already stacked 10 wins before May 1 with Thursday’s sweep of Westerly in the books. They’ve only hit the double-digit mark twice in the previous nine seasons with last year’s 13-win campaign ending in the quarterfinals against the Bulldogs.
The Wizards brought some extra energy on the road in their 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-20) victory against Westerly on April 30. A second-set rally fed into a dominant third frame as West Warwick’s only loss this season came against D-I’s Cranston West earlier this week.

“It just feels good to come in here, we lost in the playoffs to them, so to come back, you know you’re going to get a good game,” West Warwick’s Colin Kelly said. “You get the whole team hyped and the crowd involved and we were mad that we lost. We just had to do what we had to do.”
The program extends to at least 1991 and found its footing in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League starting with the 2000 season. The Wizards made a few semifinal appearances over the years, but a championship berth has eluded them.
“Going into the game we knew that Westerly was our biggest opponent,” Alex Osmena said. “We just had a fire going in and our whole team was just ready to work. It would be generational [to win a championship] with this team. This is already a year to remember, so we have that going for us, but it would be crazy.”
The win highlights West Warwick's strong performance this season and their pursuit of a first boys volleyball championship.

That championship berth should come this spring with Kelly in the middle – the senior managed a dozen kills and five blocks against Westerly. He’s quick to the kill and the senior’s height, he’s committed to Dean College for basketball, matches his athleticism.
“We have to come into practice with the mentality that we are going to kill,” Kelly said. “That’s all we have to do the rest of the way.”
Osmena provided the outside presence every successful team needs with 10 kills, three aces and five digs. Santiago Saucedo, who returned this season from a torn ACL, provided a pair of aces, including the match-winning point that clipped the top of the net.
Westerly's Nathan Paciga (7), vs, West Warwick's Colin Kelly (24), and Ethan Pereia (10)
“I knew we were up a little bit, so I knew I was good [for a hard serve],” Saucedo said. “I went for it, and then capitalized and got the ace on it. For this to be my first season back, and we’re able to do what we’re doing right now is just the best feeling ever.”
The Wizards are still weeks away from claiming anything historic. But Thursday was the first step against a Westerly team that has its own championship aspirations. Matches against Central and Lincoln still await West Warwick before a grueling playoff run that the Wizards hope ends at the Murray Center.
“I think we can get better,” Osmena said. “We have really good individual skill but we can build on the chemistry and working with each other. If we do that, we’re going to be really hard to beat.”
