As per Fotmob, he made four final-third passes, had three touches in the opposition’s box and recorded three successful dribbles. Defensively, the youngster notched five recoveries, four tackles, two interceptions, one block and one clearance. He was not dribbled past once in his 90-minute shift. 

Such a five-star display had Mainoo in contention to win the Player of the Match award, but it ultimately went to his midfield partner Casemiro, who opened the scoring and got the side on their way to securing the victory.

INEOS were keen to have the Carrington graduate agree new terms before the summer, with it now expected that he will make Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad and represent England at his second major international tournament in June.

Additionally, when he had fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim and was considering a move elsewhere, Chelsea had set their sights on a swoop for Mainoo, and would’ve made him a proposal had an opportunity presented itself.

The prospect of a fan-favourite, homegrown star making the switch to Stamford Bridge is an unthinkable one for supporters, so they can now breathe a sigh of relief that his long-term future is secure in M16.
