High school baseball: Grantsville, Carbon, Union, Canyon View march on in 3A winners bracket

Here’s a recap of Monday’s 3A baseball state tournament games at Lindquist Field.

3A Playoffs

Grantsville 11, Emery 1

Payton Cummings led Grantsville’s dynamic offense, going 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, and driving in five runs as No. 2 seed Grantsville made quick work of No. 10 seed Emery 11-1 against Emery in the opening game of the 3A state tournament bracket play at Lindquist Field.

The Cowboys broke open a scoreless tie with a six-run third inning and continued their offensive barrage with three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Patton Rose contributed by going 2 for 2 at the plate and adding three RBIs.

Emery managed a single run in the third inning but was held at bay by Grantsville pitcher Jordan Fawson, who threw 5 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts.

Grantsville’s bats tallied seven extra-base hits in the dominant performance. Both teams will resume tournament action on Tuesday.

Carbon 13, Logan 3

Logan Bennett showcased his power in 3A state tournament bracket play by going 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs to lead No. 11 seed Carbon to a 13-3 victory over No. 14 seed Logan.

The Dinos opened up scoring with three runs over the second and third innings and sealed the win with an eight-run surge in the fifth. Ricky Sandoval also contributed significantly to Carbon’s offensive dominance, going 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs.

Logan, which managed three runs in the latter innings, couldn’t contain Carbon’s bats and fell short. Both teams will return to Lindquist Field for the next round.
