HIGHLIGHTS: No. 14 Rams sweep doubleheader versus Cameron, Austin Beck makes history again
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Angelo State Rams stay in the win column and one player continues to make history.
It’s the final weekend of Angelo State baseball’s 2026 regular season, and the Rams survived a thriller versus Cameron Saturday afternoon. In game one, the Rams held a comfortable 3-1 lead entering the top of the sixth inning. This game was far from over, however, as late drama ensued and didn’t disappoint.
In the top half of the sixth inning, Cameron scored twice to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom half, the Rams appeared to be in trouble during Brett Smajstrla’s at-bat, when Austin Beck was caught in a rundown between second and third base. Beck was out, but the inning continued. Moments later, Smajstrla hit a solo home run to left field, putting ASU on top 4-3.
In the top half of the seventh and final inning, Cameron had an answer. The Aggies hit a two-run home run to right field to regain the lead at 5-4 heading into the bottom frame. The Rams however, had the last two laughs. With runners on the corners and nobody out, runner Gam Jones stole second base, but the throw to second was mishandled, allowing Connor DiGesualdo to score from third. Two batters later, Payton Bush sealed the 6-5 win for Angelo State on a walk-off single to center field.
The Rams subsequently clinched game two, which proved to be much less dramatic. Angelo State quickly led 3-0 after two innings and never looked back, holding on for a 4-1 win. This pitcher’s duel went in ASU’s favor, as starter Luke Spencer pitched a complete game, allowing just six hits and one run.
But the biggest headline of the day involves Austin Beck once again. The Rams redshirt senior has now scored 300 career runs, becoming the first player in NCAA Division II history to accomplish such a feat. This marks Beck’s latest career accolade in addition to holding Angelo State’s all-time record in stolen bases, hits and RBI.
Angelo State hosts Cameron one final time Sunday, April 26 in its regular season finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST as the Rams seek the series sweep.
