Earlier in the offseason, the Bears received the news that 27-year-old Drew Dalman was retiring one year into his multi-year contract. That was a personal decision that he has every right to make, but it left the Bears in a position where they needed to act quickly to replace him.
Chicago already traded for Garrett Bradbury, but now they have Jones to compete for the starting job. Iowa, and the Big Ten in general, have been good at pumping out good offensive linemen over the years. Jones is hoping to follow in those footsteps.

Was center a need for the Bears? Yes. Was it the most important thing they could have done? Probably not, but they made the decision, and now they have to develop this player into their future center that they can trust for a long time. The tools are there for him to be great; he just has to go out and learn on the NFL gridiron.
