According to Shams Charania’s report, Luka Doncic is returning to Los Angeles on Friday after receiving multiple injections in Spain last week for his left hamstring strain. Doncic will fly back from Spain on Friday, where he was treated for a grade 2 left hamstring strain. His status remains unknown for the Lakers vs. Rockets Game 1, scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 PM ET on ABC. The series opens in LA, with the Lakers as the No. 4 seed and the Rockets as the No. 5 seed. The Rockets are the prohibitive favorites, but does Luka’s return add some excitement?
Even if he comes back, winning this series will be a tough test for the Lakers. Austin Reaves is also out, and LeBron James is now 41 years old. The bigger risk is that Doncic’s soft tissue injury could worsen. Without Reaves, and with DeAndre Ayton being unreliable, the Lakers face serious challenges. Another storyline - this might be the last time we see LeBron vs. Kevin Durant head-to-head in the playoffs.

The Western Conference matchups are set: Denver vs. Minnesota (3–6), Lakers vs. Rockets (4–5). According to DraftKings, the Rockets are heavy favorites. If James gets even five minutes at the end, he can make the right decisions to keep the game competitive. The Lakers can only survive if they stay close for three quarters. Houston is weak in the fourth quarter. But for the Lakers to have a chance, LeBron will need to deliver something like 35–15–12 numbers.
Unfortunately, we won’t see Luka and Reaves together for the Lakers. On the other side, James and Durant meet again in the postseason - for the fourth time and the first since the 2018 NBA Finals. In their 10+ playoff matchups, both players have averaged 30 points per game.

The Lakers are the biggest underdogs in the playoffs, with only a 15% chance of winning the series. If James leads the Lakers past KD, the GOAT conversation is over. That roster includes Jake LaRavia, Bronny James, Marcus Smart, and Deandre Ayton. If LeBron does it at this age, everything belongs to him.

KD is a two-time champion and two-time Finals MVP—both against LeBron. But KD is just 7–17 in his last 24 playoff games. His stats are strong (29.9 points, 47% shooting, 8.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists), but the results are weak. After Brooklyn came the Phoenix disaster. If KD loses to this depleted Lakers team, his legacy takes a major hit.
Another point to note: the NBA Draft is on June 24, and if Giannis Antetokounmpo is traded, it will happen before then. The Knicks and Lakers will always be in the conversation. Even during the Finals, trades can happen in America, though realistically trades don’t occur during the Finals.
