It’s typical for young athletes to get involved in sports like baseball, basketball or football. But building success – whether it’s as a team or individually – in a sport outside of the mainstream takes a strong grassroots commitment.
That’s what Shane Henry and Joe Wilmont are looking to do, respectively, with the Chambersburg girls and boys lacrosse programs.
Wilmot helped lay the foundation of the Chambersburg boys program at the beginning, a player on the school’s first varsity teams started by his father, Tim, in 2005. However, the program couldn’t sustain its initial momentum.
“We had a lot of success early on,” Joe Wilmot, a 2008 Chambersburg graduate, said. “As an athlete that played multiple sports, I was able to recruit a bunch of athletes, so we had a really athletic team when we started. The challenge that we have now … once we got that initial push of ‘it’s something fun and new’ we then struggled to get kids to come out. We struggled to get athletes because they invested in other sports before the age we were starting our youth program.”

Chambersburg coach Shane Henry celebrates with his girls lacrosse team after a 21-0 regular-season victory against Mifflin County. The Trojans qualified for the District 3 playoffs for the first time this season.
Wilmot came back to coach the program in 2021 and this year, led his team to a 10-8 record.
While the boys program had some initial success but is now looking to rebuild, Henry’s girls program is reaching unprecedented heights.
The program, which began in 2013, is having its best season. The Trojans are 11-6 and qualified for the District 3 playoffs for the first time.
They are seeded ninth and open the Class AAA playoffs on Friday, May 15 at Exeter Township.
Henry is in his second season coaching the varsity team, but in 2018, along with Tina Flohr, he helped launch the Chambersburg Youth Girls Lacrosse Association, which paved the way for the present success.

“At the time, there just wasn’t a feeder system, and we knew it would take time to get that going. Now we’re seeing the fruits of that labor,” Henry said. “Our first year at the youth program, we had one team made up of third through eighth graders. We’ve grown to over 70 girls registered and multiple teams at different age groups.”
While some might be surprised at Chambersburg’s emergence this year, it came as no shock to Henry, knowing what was coming out of his youth program.
“We started last year, went 7-11, most wins in program history up to that point,” he said. “I knew my freshmen coming in this year, a lot play club year round and play together. There’s such a great dynamic already formed. I knew this was going to be a banner year.”
While teaching the game and developing skills are key traits of the youth program, a big part is fostering the growing passion the young athletes have for the game.
Chambersburg keeper Reese Heverley celebrates a Trojan score during a regular-season game against Mifflin County.
“Theres so much more buy in now,” Henry said. “At the youth level, we’re really making sure they’re falling in love with the sport. If they love it, we encourage them to stay with it.”
As Wilmot looks to follow that model, there were challenges in terms of finding good fits with a lacrosse background.
“We’ve really struggled to get coaches at the youth level that have lacrosse experience,” Wilmot said. “Now, this next year, I have kids, and alums I played with have kids starting to come through the program.”
Wilmot has found success with getting his varsity players, such as team captain Blake Dupont, to help coach the youth players. For the kids, it makes a positive experience even better.
“Those guys will ask our high school kids for autographs. They’re superstars to them,” Wilmot said. “It’s very important and very helpful. But it’s difficult for a player to do both play and coach.
“The high school team will host indoor sessions for the youth program. Players will come down and run drills, play fun games with kids.”
Chambersburg team captain Blake Dupont has helped coach youth players while balancing playing. 'They’re superstars to (the youth players),' said coach Joe Wilmot.
The efforts made in building the youth programs have worked in producing stars. Ryan Cosey will go down as one of the best players in the boys program’s history, amassing over 200 career goals. He’s committed to playing collegiately at Misericordia University, a Division III program outside of Wilkes-Barre.
“Ryan is a good example of what can happen when you start playing at 6 years old,” Wilmot said. “He played on the 10U team as a 6 year old. He had an older brother that played and wanted to play, too. He fell in love with it early and you can see it the way he plays. He’s incredibly skilled because he had the stick in his hands for so long.”
Meanwhile, junior Reagan Barrett broke her program’s career goal record with her five-goal effort May 5 against Cedar Cliff. That gave her 167 for her career, breaking a tie with 2018 graduate Hannah Raines.
Chambersburg's Ryan Cosey recorded more than 200 career goals during his time with the Trojans.
Wilmot says his program could go through some ups and downs over the next few years, but noted a wave of talent his youth program is producing around the fifth grade level. Henry, however, feels his team is only beginning its upward trajectory.
“I think we’re going to be around quite a while with the interest level and commitment level,” he said. “I see us making a run every year for the upcoming future.
