Matthew Boyd suffered one of the strangest injury setbacks of the MLB season, and it came nowhere near a mound.
The Chicago Cubs left-hander had already dealt with injury trouble earlier this year, but this latest issue arrived in the most unexpected way possible.
Instead of a pitch, swing, or fielding play causing the problem, Boydâs knee injury happened during a normal family moment at home. Now, the Cubs are facing another hit to their pitching depth.

As shared via B/R Walk-Off on X, Boydâs injury came while spending time with his children.
âMatthew Boyd will undergo surgery after suffering a meniscus injury. His injury happened when he sat down to play with his kids,â it was reported.
The Cubs later confirmed Boyd suffered a left meniscus injury and placed him on the 15-day injured list.
Manager Craig Counsell described the incident as an innocent movement while Boyd was going down to the ground and getting back up, calling it an âunexplainableâ setback.
The full recovery timeline will not be clear until after surgery.
Matthew Boyd's knee injury occurred during a normal family moment at home, rather than from a baseball-related incident.
Matthew Boyd's injury further impacts the Cubs' pitching depth, which was already strained due to previous injuries this season.
The article does not specify the recovery timeline for Matthew Boyd following his knee surgery.

If Boyd only needs a meniscus trim, he could potentially return later in the summer. But if doctors perform a full repair, his 2026 season could be in serious doubt.
The timing is especially frustrating for Chicago. Boyd had just produced one of his best outings of the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks, throwing six innings and allowing only two earned runs.
Before the injury, the 35-year-old had made five starts this season, going 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA and 31 strikeouts across 24 innings.
His absence adds more pressure to a Cubs rotation already dealing with multiple injuries, including setbacks to other key arms.
For now, Chicago is expected to rely on internal options such as Javier Assad, Ben Brown or Colin Rea to cover the gap.
But for Boyd, the biggest frustration is obvious. What should have been a harmless moment with his kids has now turned into a surgical setback.
