The Kansas City Chiefs hit most of their draft goals early in the first couple of rounds, and it was in the later picks that the AFC West franchise made an interesting selection.

The Chiefs took LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at pick No. 249 to add some youth to the quarterback room that features Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields.

While the Chiefs have their starter in Mahomes, with Field backing him up in 2026, there is a thought that if Nussmeier can show something in his rookie season, then maybe the Chiefs' depth chart for 2027 could look a little different.

No, he isn't usurping Mahomes, but Fields? Right now, it feels like a long shot, but the Chiefs have now added some competition to the quarterback room.

What are Nussmeier expectations?

In truth, they are low, given where he was drafted.

Plus, he won't be seeing the field in 2026 unless something drastic happens, and I'm talking injuries to Mahomes and Fields.

Nussmeier is a dart throw for the Chiefs, and one that they hope, in the next couple of seasons, can become the backup to Patrick.

Fields isn't a long-term answer for most, and Nussmeier gives the Chiefs something different.

Granted, it might not work, and he could be off the team in a couple of seasons, or he could show some promise, and the Chiefs might keep him around.
