Hunter Dietz, an Arkansas baseball player, overcame significant physical and mental challenges to excel in his sport. After battling arm injuries early in his college career, he has emerged as a key player for the team.
FAYETTEVILLE — Inside the garage of Hunter Dietz's childhood home lies a homemade gym the family calls "The Dietz Dungeon." His dad built the facility before Dietz's freshman year of high school. No one in the family had an excuse to stay out of shape.
Inside the dungeon, a simple message is plastered on one of the walls.
"Don't wish for it. Work for it."
One year ago, Arkansas baseball welcomed Tennessee to Baum-Walker Stadium for the final series of the 2025 regular season. Dietz only had three appearances in his college career due to two separate arm ailments. A stress fracture that required surgery in his elbow limited his action as a freshman, and an ulna bone injury delayed his return.

Dietz looked like his normal self the previous weekend in a brief outing against LSU. Arkansas hoped it had found another quality lefty to add to a pitching staff destined for Omaha, but Dietz got shelled by the Volunteers. His velocity took a nose dive as Tennessee rattled off three hits, one homer and three runs with zero outs recorded.
He didn't pitch again that season as Arkansas was just a few wins shy of what could have been its first national title.
"I was really nervous, but looking back on it now, I keep getting those memories in my phone from a year ago," Dietz said.
One year later, Dietz is the Arkansas ace. He assumed the Friday night starting role in mid-April and has rewarded his coaches with a 7-2 record and a 3.22 ERA. His 108 strikeouts lead the SEC, and the Hogs have won each of his past six starts.
He lived up to the Dietz Dungeon mantra and soared through a variety of hurdles to become one of the best pitchers in America and a projected first-round pick in this summer's MLB draft. It wasn't the expected path when Dietz was unhittable during fall scrimmages as a freshman, but the 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore is thankful for the adversity.
"I've learned every single thing I need to know about myself. I wouldn't do it any different," Dietz said after pitching Arkansas to a 12-2 win over Oklahoma.
"I feel like the bumps have been really good for me. Like every single bump I've had, I've been able to walk away from it and take something away that I can do better and grow on as a pitcher and a player and a teammate."
Arkansas baseball lefty Hunter Dietz fires a pitch during the Razorbacks' 12-2 win over Oklahoma on Friday, May 8.
Perhaps none of the bumps for Dietz were more difficult to overcome than what was going on inside his own mind.
His family and the Arkansas coaches all admit there was a block in his head, but it wasn't something Dietz could feel.
"The mental side of recovery is real, and that was especially hard for Hunter to understand," said Michael Dietz, Hunter's father. "It can be there and you not even be conscious of it. He wasn't out there thinking to himself, 'I don't want to get hurt again,' but the mind is a powerful thing."
Arkansas pitching coach Matt Hobbs recalled on a recent episode of the Razorback Daily Dose podcast a moment last spring when Hunter threw a pitch 93 mph while throwing to live batters in the indoor facility. It was a rare jolt during his road back to the mound.
Hobbs seized on an opportunity to take a badgering approach.
"I'm screaming at him, 'Throw it harder. Throw it harder. Throw it harder. Throw it harder.' And it just kept on going up, and up, and up, and up, and all of a sudden it touched 96," Hobbs said.
The velocity didn't magically become consistent after that moment, but it was evidence a Major League fastball still resided inside his golden left arm.
The journey back from that Tennessee outing started with a summer trip to the prestigious Cape Cod League. Hunter joined the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Floyd, who has 56 years of experience focusing on the art of firing strikes.
Floyd saw a "baby tiger waiting to get unleashed" in Hunter. The top priority was restoring his velocity back to the mid-90s before the ensuing spring with Arkansas, and a patient approach was developed. Dietz didn't start a single game for the Harbor Hawks. He worked out of the bullpen, initially in spots without much pressure so Hyannis could pull him quickly if needed.
Arkansas Razorbacks' Hunter Dietz (32) pitches as Auburn Tigers take on Arkansas Razorbacks at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala. on Friday, April 3, 2026. Arkansas Razorbacks defeated Auburn Tigers 3-2.
"(Hunter) never complained," Floyd said. "There are times when you have to be tough on a kid, but Hunter was tough on himself in a healthy way. He was patient and he understood he was here to get experience and build his confidence."
Floyd believed some tweaks to the pitcher's motion could provide a jolt to his velocity and make Hunter a more consistent strike-thrower.
The duo worked hard on a variety of things. They straightened his posture and made sure his weight landed on the balls of his feet. With the arm building its strength, Floyd wanted Hunter more reliant on his explosive lower half. A slight lengthening of his stride gave his arm more time to catchup with the torque from his legs.
By the end of the summer, Hunter had an 8.49 ERA in seven appearances with 11⅔ innings pitched. On the surface, those might be concerning numbers, but Floyd knew Dietz was primed for success with Arkansas after he struck out four batters in 1⅓ innings during his final appearance of the summer.
"I told (Dietz), 'You finally got it, you big dumb donkey,'" Floyd said. "He was throwing in the mid-90s and everything with his delivery was repeatable. You could see something clicked."
The transfer portal was open during the first couple weeks of Dietz's tenure with the Harbor Hawks, but leaving the Razorbacks was never a consideration.
"Arkansas invested so much in Hunter, and they never gave up on him," Michael said. "They kept him close with the team, heck, they even took him to Omaha. It's a family, and we love the Razorbacks. We weren't leaving."
The mantra inside 'The Dietz Dungeon', which is the homemade gym Michael Dietz built for Hunter Dietz and his family before Hunter's freshman year of high school.
Hunter wanted to see his potential realized inside Baum-Walker Stadium. The first step was a successful round of fall scrimmages.
The numbers didn't scream optimism. In unofficial stats compiled by local media members, Hunter posted a 9.82 ERA in five appearances.
However, there were positive signs. He had 13 strikeouts and only three walks in 7⅓ innings. Even with a .353 batting average against Dietz, Razorbacks coach Dave Van Horn consistently said he would be a weekend starter by the time the regular season arrived.
And according to the Arkansas coaches, Dietz looked like his old self during spring scrimmages. The velocity was consistent and complimented a four-pitch mix. His curveball rose to another level, giving him a third quality off-speed pitch along with the slider and cutter.
He eventually earned the No. 2 spot in the rotation and got the ball against TCU in the opening weekend.
There were some early hiccups with just six innings pitched in his first two starts, but everything clicked with a 12-strikeout performance against Stetson on March 7. That's the moment his mom, Julie Dietz, believed Hunter was back to himself.
Michael said it was his 11-strikeout gem against Auburn on April 3 where everything looked right. That was his last start as the No. 2 pitcher, with Van Horn moving Hunter into the Friday-night role the following weekend against Alabama.
Now, Hunter is right where he always was supposed to be, leading the Arkansas pitching staff with the postseason around the corner.
This was his destiny, but even Van Horn admits there wasn't 100% certainty Hunter would seize this success when he couldn't record an out against the Volunteers.
Still, Arkansas never gave up, and neither did Hunter. This is the end result of their hard work and commitment to each other.
"We get that guy right, he's going to be a good one for us," Van Horn said. "We saw a little bit of it in the fall. We thought, 'Yeah, here we go.' And obviously once he mentally got 100% over the hump, that he's fine, 100% healthy. He's letting it rip, man. He's good."
