The NBA handed Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball a combined $60,000 in fines on Wednesday, and Ball will play Friday against the Orlando Magic at 7:30 p.m. ET, where the Hornets need one win to reach the postseason.
Whether the league got this exactly right is a reasonable question. What's not debatable is that Bam Adebayo's season ended while Ball is getting another shot at it.
Executive vice president James Jones announced Ball was assessed a retroactive Flagrant Foul 2 for the second-quarter incident in Tuesday's 127-126 overtime win.
Per the NBA's official statement, Ball "has been fined $35,000 and assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 upon league office review for making unnecessary and reckless contact with Miami Heat center-forward Bam Adebayo that created a significant injury risk."
ESPN's Shams Charania reported the league had spoken directly with Ball and other related parties before issuing its ruling Wednesday afternoon.
Ball received an additional $25,000 fine for using profane language during his postgame television interview.

"I apologize on that one. I got hit in the head, didn't really know where I was, but I'ma check on him and see if he's OK," he told reporters. He followed that up when pressed on intent: "I haven't even seen it. Like I said, I got hit in the head, didn't even know where I was. Just playing basketball."
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said right after the game that Ball should have been ejected:
"I didn't see it [when it happened], but I don't think it's cute. I don't think it's funny. I think it's a st**id play. It's a dangerous play. Obviously, our best player was out.
"I'm not making an excuse. The Hornets played great and they made those plays down the stretch. We had our opportunities to win. That's a shame. You should be penalized for that. I don't think that belongs in the game -- tripping guys, shenanigans."
He was correct, and the league confirmed it the next afternoon without doing anything that would actually change Friday's roster sheet, which is sad.
