The Dallas Cowboys are counting on rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham to make an immediate impact in 2026. With a struggling defense, Barham is expected to contribute significantly alongside starters Dee Winters and DeMarvion Overshown.
The Dallas Cowboys are pinning a fair amount of hope on their rookie draft class to fill immediate needs in 2026. Their historically poor defense from a year ago needs major changes and Dallas only partially utilized free agency to make those changes. It’s clear rookies like linebacker Jaishawn Barham will be expected to contribute right away.
With Dee Winters and DeMarvion Overshown penciled in as starters at inside linebacker, the hope is Barham can carry a significant load as a regular contributor. Looking at the last two rookie classes is a great way to see how realistic those expectations are this season.
Using PFF raw data and grades, we will look at how rookie linebackers have performed in the past. We can see what rounds they were drafted, how well they played and how likely they are to be instant assets.
There were eight qualifying linebackers in the 2025 rookie class. Philadelphia Eagles' rookie Jihaad Campbell ranked at the top of the class and Cincinnati Bengals rookie Barrett Carter finished at the bottom of these rankings.
No rookie graded in the top 10 of the NFL, three rookies graded in the top 50, and four rookies graded in the bottom 10 (out of 88). Worth noting: the two top performers, Carson Schwesinger and Campbell, played on elite defenses while the three bottom performers, Demetrius Knight, and Carter all played on two of the worst defenses in the NFL (Dallas and ).
Jaishawn Barham is expected to be a significant contributor to the Dallas Cowboys' defense as they look to improve from a poor performance last season.
Historically, rookie linebackers' performance varies by draft round, with data showing trends in their immediate impact and overall contributions.
The starting inside linebackers for the Cowboys in 2026 are expected to be Dee Winters and DeMarvion Overshown.
The Cowboys made limited changes through free agency and are relying heavily on their rookie draft class, including Barham, to address defensive weaknesses.

Only seven rookie linebackers qualified by playing at least 20 percent of the snaps in 2024. Edgerrin Cooper from the Green Bay Packers finished No. 1 and Marist Liufau from the Cowboys finished last at No. 7.
In a field of 84, Cooper graded in the top 10 overall as a rookie while three others joined him in the top 50. Success came from all different areas of the draft, including undrafted, with most of the top performing linebackers playing on the top performing NFL defenses.
A common thread in both of these linebacker classes and both of the last two cornerback draft classes as well, is top performing rookies come from top performing defenses. One could say the defenses are great because the rookies are great, but one could also deduce the reason the rookies are performing well is because teammates are performing well around them.
The Cowboys have had the unfortunate distinction of having low performers in both of these draft classes. James graded as the second worst linebacker in his rookie class and Liufau graded as the worst in his draft class. It’s possible the Cowboys are terrible at scouting linebackers but it’s more likely they just dropped their rookies into impossible situations in each of the last two seasons.
If the Cowboys want Barham to thrive as a rookie linebacker, they’d be wise to improve the conditions around him. The hope is that with new defensive coordinator Christian Parker in place, the Cowboys are finally on track to do just that.
