Mark Cuban’s influence in sports has extended far beyond the NBA, and one of his moves played a key role in shaping Indiana football’s future.
The billionaire entrepreneur, best known for his long-time ownership of the Dallas Mavericks, has increasingly become involved in the evolving NIL landscape.
With college athletics now heavily tied to financial backing, major figures like Cuban are stepping in to help programs secure top talent.
In this case, it was about landing a quarterback that Indiana believed could transform its system, and Cuban did not hesitate when the opportunity came up.

Speaking via Front Office Sports, Cuban detailed how the deal came together.
“[Scott Dolson’s] like, ‘We’ve got this quarterback that we really, really like that we think would be great in [Curt Cignetti’s] system, we just need a little bit more,'” Cuban said.
He added, “I’m like, ‘How much is a little bit?’ And so he told me, and I’m like, ‘OK, you know, we’re on a roll, I’ll put up the money to get this quarterback.’”
The conversation highlights just how direct NIL-backed decisions can be. Indiana identified Mendoza as a perfect fit for head coach Curt Cignetti’s offense, and Cuban stepped in to bridge the financial gap.
Mendoza, who had already shown promise as a dual-threat quarterback, became one of the most important additions for the Hoosiers as they looked to elevate their program.
Mark Cuban's involvement in the NIL landscape provided financial support that facilitated Fernando Mendoza's transfer to the Indiana Hoosiers.
The NIL landscape refers to the ability of college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness, significantly impacting recruitment and financial backing for programs.
Major figures like Mark Cuban help college programs secure top talent through financial support and resources, influencing recruitment strategies in the competitive NIL environment.

Cuban also revealed that this was not purely a business decision.
“I knew [Fernando’s brother Alberto], who was already on the team, was a Heat fan and he would sit behind the Miami bench, and when I would come to go to Mavs-Heat games, he was like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to IU,’” Cuban continued.
“So we met. And so I’m like, ‘OK, I’ll put up the money, and we can go get Fernando, and the rest is history,’” he concluded.
That connection added a personal layer to the recruitment, turning what could have been just another NIL deal into something more relationship-driven.
It also reflects how modern college recruiting is evolving. Relationships, exposure, and financial backing are all blending together, often involving figures far outside traditional college athletics.
For Indiana, the result is clear. They secured a quarterback they believe can lead their system, and for Cuban, it is another example of how his impact continues to stretch across different levels of the sport.
