Programs now have the opportunity to remake themselves year to year, unlike any time previously in college basketball history. With that potential comes a hefty price tag, especially if schools are bidding against other programs for the top available talent.
There have been estimates thrown out by various coaches in college basketball about how much it costs to field a competitive roster in the NIL era, but we now have further insight into the finances involved with bringing in an elite-level lead-guard.
Joe Tipton discussed the topic with over a dozen coaches, general managers and sources to come up with a price range.
One general manager volunteered a baseline number needed to bring in a top-tier transfer point guard.
"If you wanted a top-10 point guard, you probably needed $3 million ready to go,” one GM told On3.
Anything less than $3 million was generally viewed as a bargain, and it was not unheard of for programs to open the wallet to reach $4 million in certain cases.
The figures do not include NIL packages for international transfers, high school recruits, or players retained by their incumbent programs.
