The Carolina Panthers are projected to have approximately -$2.9 million in effective salary cap space after the 2026 NFL Draft, ranking them third-lowest in the league. To address this, they will likely need to restructure some of their larger contracts.
The Carolina Panthers may have to crunch the numbers pretty soon.
According to Over the Cap, the Panthers are one of four teams without any effective salary cap space. This means, after signing at least 51 players and their rookie class, that they'll be over the league's cap number.
OTC projects their effective cap space at approximately -$2.9 million, which would rank as the third-lowest mark in the entire league. (That's kinda what happens when you spend big in free agency.)
So, how can Carolina relieve themselves of that stress? Well, they can (and probably will) seek to restructure some of their bigger contracts.
If the Panthers go with the simple restructuring approach, where payments are prorated into signing bonuses within the remainder of the pacts, then they can create up to $61.5 million in cap spaceâper OTC. That would bring their possible cap space to just over $58.5 million.
Their simple restructure potential of $61.5 million is the ninth-greatest in the NFL.
If Carolina goes all out with the unlikelier avenue of maximum restructures, where the money is prorated by extending contracts or adding void years, they can open up to around $106.3 millionâthe sixth-greatest potential.
The Panthers came out of the 2026 NFL Draft with seven selections, all of whom are expected to sign their first pro deals before the start of rookie minicamp on May 8. The group is headlined by Georgia offensive tackle Monroe Freeling, whose cap number as the 19th overall pick is projected at a little over $3.8 million.
The Panthers currently have an effective salary cap space of approximately -$2.9 million, making it one of the teams with the least cap space in the NFL.
The Panthers can create salary cap space by restructuring some of their larger contracts to alleviate their financial constraints.
The Panthers are over the salary cap due to significant spending in free agency and the need to sign at least 51 players along with their rookie class.
