Baseball season is underway, and while many Georgians are happily watching, this weekend was a tragic one with the loss of renowned Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox. Here's what we know:
The Braves confirmed the death of Cox on Saturday, May 9.
While an official cause of death has not been announced, Cox had reportedly been suffering from congestive heart failure and other complications following a major stroke in 2019.
Cox first managed the Braves from 1978 to 1981, during which he had a 266-323 record. He would again manage the Braves starting in 1990, leading them to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the 1995 World Series title.
Cox was elected into the National baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
In their post confirming his death, the Braves called Cox "The best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform" with a managerial legacy that "will never be matched."
The MLB said "We mourn the passing of Hall of Famer Bobby Cox, the fourth-winningest manager in MLB history."
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement in which he called Cox "a true legend" with a record that solidified him "in the hearts of generations of fans as the beloved manager we all remember."
Georgia Rep. Clay Fully said "As a kid raised in the North Georgia mountains, watching lead our Braves was a cherished part of my childhood. He was a legend who knew how to fight for a win, and my prayers are with his family today."
Bobby Cox was 82 years old when he passed away.

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson called Cox "One of one, leading the Braves to incredible success and countless memories for baseball fans in Georgia and across the entire country."
Barstool Baseball, which is part of Barstool Sports, called him "One of the greatest baseball minds the game had ever seen."
Cox was 84 at the time of his death.
Cox retired at the end of his 2010 campaign.
Cox leaves behind his wife, Pamela Boswell, who he'd been married to since 1978, and multiple children plus grandchildren.
