When it comes to surviving the legendary Nurburgring 24 Hours, most automotive manufacturers rely on sending one or two highly specialized factory cars to the grid. But Porsche ain’t gonna do it the normal way. For the 2026 endurance classic, they are not just entering the race; they are launching a full-scale invasion.
As the paddock prepares for the brutal, unpredictable conditions of the “Green Hell,” Porsche has officially flooded the entry list. Out of a total starting grid of roughly 160 racing cars, Porsche is fielding a staggering 60 customer cars.
This is something wild. Porsche is dead focused on using a sheer numbers advantage to conquer the toughest race on the planet. And we can’t really blame them, can we? At the end of the day, the toughest driver on the grid is going to survive and win the top spot. So what if Porsche just wants to increase their winning percentage?
While Porsche’s 60-car army is spread across multiple grassroots classes, the absolute tip of the spear is in the premier SP9 category. The top tier of the Nurburgring 24 Hours is a brutal Balance of Performance (BoP) battlefield, and Porsche is going all in with their chips: 13 Porsche 911 GT3 R machines in the SP9 class.
And by stacking the top class with the latest 992-generation GT3 R, Porsche is playing a massive strategic data game. On a terrifying 25.3-kilometer track that weaves through the Eifel forest, track conditions can change from dry tarmac to torrential rain in a matter of seconds.
So, make a guess what having 13 cars on the track does for your engineering team. Yeah, constant real-time telemetry from every single sector of the mountain. If it starts raining at the Carousel, the entire Porsche network knows about it instantly.
Leading this SP9 charge is the iconic Manthey Racing #911. Which fans also refer to as the “Grello.” Driven by factory talents like Thomas Preining, the neon-yellow machine is widely considered one of the heavy favorites to take the overall win.

At the core of it, Porsche’s decision to deploy such a massive fleet is also a direct counter to the unique chaos of the Nordschleife. You have to understand that the Nürburgring 24 Hours is fundamentally different from races like Le Mans because of the terrifying traffic.
Factory drivers in the SP9 class have to hustle their 911 GT3 R machines at nearly 280 km/h down the Döttinger Höhe straight in the pitch black. While doing so, they are constantly dodging drastically slower, amateur-driven lower-class cars. It is a recipe for inevitable crashes and mechanical decay.
By putting that many cars in the top class, Porsche gets that math edge. Even if the “Grello” suffers a tire blowout or gets caught up in a multi-car pileup during the night, Porsche still has a dozen other top-tier GT3 machines ready to inherit the lead.
