NC State captures needed series win over Miami
NC State secures vital series win over Miami, boosting NCAA hopes
Kimi Antonelli solidified his lead in the 2026 Drivers' Championship with a win at the Miami Grand Prix, despite a challenging Sprint. McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri also excelled, finishing second and third, respectively, boosting their standings.
Kimi Antonelli has firmly tightened his grip on the 2026 Drivers’ Championship following a commanding weekend at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix. Although the young Mercedes star endured a slightly messy Saturday Sprint as he recovered to sixth after an poor start and a track-limits penalty, he bounced back brilliantly to claim the win in what became a messy grand prix on Sunday.
This haul of points allowed him to extend his championship lead over teammate George Russell, who finished fourth in what was a difficult weekend for the Briton. With Mercedes continuing to dictate the pace at the front of the grid, Antonelli’s ability to seamlessly convert pole position into a decisive Sunday win ensures the Silver Arrows leave Florida with their early-season momentum fully intact and yet another place in history.
McLaren saw a huge improvement in performance after a slather of upgrades. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri executed a flawless 100-kilometer sprint on Saturday, securing a dominant 1-2 finish that ended Mercedes’ winning streak. The Papaya outfit then carried that blistering pace into Sunday. Norris finished second and Piastri joined him on the podium alongside the championship leader.
This massive combined points haul has catapulted both drivers up the individual leaderboard and established McLaren as a highly legitimate threat in the constructors’ championship.
It was a somewhat frustrating weekend for Ferrari, who saw their advantage for second place in the constructors’ standings fall thanks to the Woking outfit’s improvements. While Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton consistently finished in the points across both events, the Scuderia lacked the outright pace to disrupt the top three on Sunday.
Max Verstappen finished fifth-place for Red Bull, quietly accumulating points in the midfield. Further down the pack, valuable finishes from Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Williams’ Carlos Sainz provided some subtle but important points ahead of Canada.
