Thunder take Game 1 against Suns with a 119-84 victory
Varun Chakravarthy attributes his poor performance in the IPL to pitch conditions rather than his bowling mistakes. He recently bounced back with impressive figures of 3/14, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their first win after six matches.
Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy said his recent struggles were due to pitches and not because of any āmistakesā in his bowling, while also responding to criticism from outside.
The spinner returned to form with figures of 3/14 on a slow Eden Gardens surface, helping Kolkata Knight Riders register their first win after six matches, beating Rajasthan Royals by four wickets.
When asked about his difficult phase since the T20 World Cup Super Eights match against South Africa on February 22, Chakravarthy responded, āBowlers will concede runs. Which game are you talking about?ā
His dip in form began during that stage, when he was hit by David Miller and Dewald Brevis, and it continued into the IPL. Despite taking 14 wickets in the T20 World Cup alongside Jasprit Bumrah, he went at over 11 runs an over in the later matches and picked up only five wickets in the last five games.
In IPL 2026, he conceded 48 runs in four overs in the opening match against Mumbai Indians and took four matches to get his first wicket.
Chakravarthy said there was no issue with his bowling. āJust because Iāve taken three wickets today, I donāt want to make a sweeping statement. Thatās the nature of the game."
āIn the next match, if the wicket has nothing in it, thatās going to happen to every spinner. As you saw, initially every spinner was struggling. Thatās how it is," he said, as cited by news agency PTI.
āOnce the pitches start slowing down, thatās when we come into the game and become more effective. So itās the nature of the game and we canāt change it. I donāt think much about it.ā
He added, āI wasnāt making any mistakes -- it was because of the pitches. Iām very tough on myself; if I donāt do well, I analyse what went wrong."
āBut the pitches earlier had nothing for spinners. If you see other spinners, it was the same for everyone. Itās good that there is something in the pitch now.ā
He said spinners become effective only when conditions help them. āOnce there is something in the pitch, I go back to my strength --- attacking the stumps."
āBut if there is nothing in the pitch, thatās when bowlers start getting confused, even look clueless, and that happens to everyone.
āIt has happened to the best of the best. So no one should be judged on just one good or bad performance.ā
On suggestions that he changed his pace and lengths, he said, āMy speed has been the same. I havenāt changed anything in speed or length.
Varun Chakravarthy stated that his struggles were due to pitch conditions and not mistakes in his bowling.
He achieved figures of 3/14, helping Kolkata Knight Riders secure their first win of the season against Rajasthan Royals.
Before his recent match, Chakravarthy had a dip in form, taking only five wickets in his last five IPL games.
He took 14 wickets during the T20 World Cup, but struggled in subsequent matches.

āIāve only tweaked my lines a bit... more cramping lines, not just the fourth stump channel but also wider on off or leg. Iām not sticking only to the stumps.ā
Chakravarthy said the win was important for KKR after a slow start under captain Ajinkya Rahane. He credited head coach Abhishek Nayar for keeping the team focused and said there were emotional moments in the dressing room.
āVery, very significant. I can tell you I saw many tears in the dressing room today, which we didnāt even see in the year we won the IPL in 2024,ā he said.
āThe main credit goes to the coaching staff because they didnāt let the outside noise affect us."
āThere were too many people making judgments which were totally baseless. At such times, you need a strong core, and we have that.ā
