Ibrahima Konaté’s future appears to be nearing resolution — and it’s one that likely takes him off Real Madrid’s radar for good.
For months, the Liverpool center-back had been heavily linked with a potential move away from Anfield, with his contract winding down and speculation growing around a possible free transfer. Real Madrid, in particular, had been mentioned as a serious contender at various points. But now, the narrative has shifted decisively.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby, Konaté strongly indicated that he is set to remain with the club.
“There’s a good chance I’ll still be here next season,” he said. “That’s always been what I wanted.”
More tellingly, the 26-year-old suggested that a new deal is close to being finalized.
“I’m just waiting for everything to be completed,” he added. “When it’s done, you can ask the coach.”
Those comments align with growing expectations that Liverpool and Konaté are on the verge of agreeing terms on an extension — bringing an end to a saga that has dragged on for well over a year.
Negotiations between the two parties have been ongoing since 2023, with little visible progress for long stretches. That uncertainty opened the door for interest from clubs like Real Madrid and PSG, both of whom monitored the situation closely in case an opportunity arose to sign him without a transfer fee.
At one stage, Madrid appeared particularly attentive to the situation. However, reports earlier this year suggested that the Spanish club had cooled their interest, partly due to a dip in Konaté’s performances and shifting priorities elsewhere in their defensive planning.
Liverpool, for their part, remained patient — and confident. Konaté himself referenced similar contract situations within the squad, pointing to and , whose renewals also took time to materialize.
“That’s how these things go,” he explained. “We’ve been in talks for a long time. It’s similar to what happened with Virgil and Mo last year. In the end, we’re on the right track.”
Since joining Liverpool from in 2021 for €40 million, Konaté has established himself as a key figure in the team’s defense. He has made 178 appearances for the club, contributing seven goals and four assists, while also playing a role in a period of sustained success.
His trophy haul includes a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Community Shield — a reflection of both his importance and Liverpool’s competitiveness during his tenure.
Beyond the sporting aspect, Konaté also emphasized his emotional connection to the club.
“I have a special relationship with the fans and with everyone who works here,” he said. “It’s more than just a team — it’s like a family. This club means a lot to me.”
Financially, a renewal would likely come with improved terms. Currently earning a relatively modest salary compared to other senior players in the squad, Konaté is expected to move significantly higher up Liverpool’s wage structure if a new deal is signed.
