The Brooklyn Nets are eyeing the 2026 NBA Draft and the possibility of selecting AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 pick. While Dybantsa is seen as a safe choice, questions about his fit and weaknesses remain.
The Brooklyn Nets came into this offseason hoping to get lucky enough in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft to be able to select whoever they want with the No. 1 overall pick. Once the Lottery comes around on May 10, Brooklyn will know how much of the class they will have to research, but if they get the top pick, should they be weary of BYU forward AJ Dybantsa?
"Whoever gets it, itâs not an easy decision. Dybantsa has become the safe pick, but I would still think long and hard about taking Peterson as long as the background stuff checks out," Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 posted on X. Goodman was adding commentary to a recent mock draft from The Field of 68's recent mock draft by adding what he heard from one NBA general manager on the No. 1 pick.
"There are questions that he needs to answer," the exec continued, per Goodman. As of this writing, it seems that most pundits have Dybantsa as the expected No. 1 pick of the draft, but that could also depend on what Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and Duke forward Cameron Boozer are able to show in the pre-draft process. Peterson has to address injury concerns while Boozer has to show his physical profile translates to the NBA level.
While Dybantsa appears to be the prospect with the least amounts of questions to answer, the Nets may still have to give some thought as to how he would fit within their current ecosystem. In Jonathan Wasserman's scouting report on Dybantsa for Bleacher Report, he noted that some of the weaknesses in the Cougars forward's game are his defensive impact, three-point shooting, and whether he is able to be effective in an off-ball role.
Brooklyn is still very much in the mode of acquiring as many assets and talented players as possible so even if Dybantsa's weaknesses show themselves during the Combine, they should still consider him with the No. 1 pick. It seems that the majority of people offering their opinion on the draft consider Dybantsa to be the best draft prospect so if the Nets have the first overall pick, they should take Dybantsa and not look back.
AJ Dybantsa is considered a safe pick but has weaknesses in defensive impact, three-point shooting, and effectiveness in off-ball roles.
Other top prospects include Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and Duke forward Cameron Boozer, both of whom have their own questions to address before the draft.
The 2026 NBA Draft Lottery is scheduled for May 10, which will determine the Nets' chances of securing the No. 1 overall pick.
