Taysom Hill's future with the New Orleans Saints is uncertain as he faces the possibility of retirement at age 35, following a series of injuries. His unique contributions to the team have made him a standout player, but the organization is undergoing significant changes this offseason.
"All good things come to an end" is a popular saying that has endured for centuries, and one we have all likely said at some point in our lives, is. Introduced by English poet Geoffrey Chaucer in the late 1300s, the phrase reflects the idea that nothing lasts forever, even the moments we cherish most, a bittersweet reality. For those wondering, thereās a clear parallel between this saying and the offseason for the New Orleans Saints -- and Taysom Hill.
A team in the midst of transition under head coach Kellen Moore, the Saints face several difficult decisions regarding longtime veterans who have served as core, foundational pieces for over a decade. We have already witnessed the departure of linebacker Demario Davis this offseason. While not entirely shocking, it still resonated with many, as he had been the heartbeat of the organization for years. More decisions loom, particularly involving players like defensive end Cameron Jordan and running back Alvin Kamara, both of whom have cemented their place among the greatest to ever wear the black and gold.
While those uncertainties leave fans unsettled, there is another player whose situation evokes a similar feeling. His name is Taysom Hill. A former undrafted free agent out of BYU, Hill defied the odds after being brought to New Orleans from the Green Bay Packersā practice squad. As a nontraditional athlete at the quarterback position, former head coach Sean Payton helped mold Hill into something the league had never quite seen before.
If āwhat canāt he do?ā were a player, it would be Taysom Hill. He can throw. He can run. He can catch. He can block. He can tackle. A true one-of-one in his era. For all the tremendous things Hill has accomplished in a Saints uniform, the reality is that his playing days are closer to the end than the beginning. At age 35, and coming off multiple serious injuries in recent seasons, Hillās time with the team is likely winding down, with a strong possibility that last season was his final one.
For Saints fans, that reality is difficult to accept. Hill is someone who has poured his heart and soul into the city and the organization for nearly a decade, embodying what it means to be a New Orleans Saint, a selfless leader on and off the field whose effort was unmatched.
Rather than focusing on the end, itās worth reflecting on the remarkable career Hill has put together, and where he stands among the all-time Saints greats.
Not to mention the countless effort plays on special teams that donāt always show up in the box score. Hill has been credited with 18 special teams tackles (14 solo, four assists) and two blocked punts in his career (against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 and Atlanta Falcons in 2019), plus a special teams fumble recovery against the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. Hillās versatility and production across multiple categories may never be replicated again.
For someone who never quite fit the mold of a traditional star, Hill made the most of every opportunity he was given, and thatās what makes him special. A player who did everything, asked for nothing in return, and gave it his all. If it is, in fact, the end of his days as a Saint, his legacy in No. 7 in New Orleans lives on forever.
