On May 15, Iowa Athletics made a special announcement that it has purchased the official court used in the NCAA Houston Regional Elite Eight as a replacement for the aging Carver-Hawkeye Arena parquet floor, which was the same surface the Hawkeyes played on during their first Elite Eight appearance since 1987
The new playing surface comes as the current Carver-Hawkeye Arena court, last replaced in 2016, has reached its typical replacement point in its lifecycle. As the Hawkeyes replace the hardwood surface at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the upgrade ensures a high-performance surface for all athletes and introduces a visual update inside the venue.
While the parquet flooring will be removed for the first time since the arena opened in 1983, Iowa has promised that the modern court's overall look will remain similar to the previous floor, with a few new design elements incorporated. The court will continue to be known as Mediacom Court.
The new court, constructed out of maple wood, is manufactured by Connor Sports, a longtime provider of flooring for NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.
Per Iowa Athletics, here is an approximate timeline for installing the new court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
As for the old Carver-Hawkeye Arena floor, Iowa will preserve the current court and is currently developing plans to create commemorative memorabilia for fans and supporters, with details emerging in the near future.
