IPL Toss Today: Varun Chakravarthy returns as Gujarat Titans opt to bowl against KKR

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to field first against Kolkata Knight Riders in a crucial IPL 2026 clash, with moisture on the surface and overcast conditions influencing the decision at the toss.

GT head into the contest riding a dominant five-match winning streak and another victory tonight could take them to the top of the table ahead of RCB on net run rate. Gill said the conditions looked slightly sticky after rain around the venue on Friday and backed his in-form bowling attack to make early use of the pitch.

“We're gonna bowl first. Yeah, it does look like that (pitch having moisture), there was a little bit of rain around yesterday and it looks a little bit sticky, we are hoping that it's going to get better in the second innings,” Gill said.

The GT captain also praised his bowling unit for driving the team’s remarkable run this season, highlighting the importance of balanced attacks in title-winning campaigns.

“Yeah, definitely, we believe that, batsmen do win you matches, but if you want to win championships, your bowling unit has to be in form and luckily for us, they are firing all cylinders. Our bowling unit has been top-notch this season,” he added.

Gill also stressed that GT cannot afford complacency despite their strong position near the top of the table.

“This is not the stage, this is not the time to take any teams lightly, but we're hoping to win the next two and hopefully be stable in the top two positions. It gives the edge to the teams that finish in the top two. You get one extra match. Hopefully, we won't play the extra match, but it does give you an edge,” Gill said, confirming that Gujarat are unchanged for the game.

For KKR, the equation is straightforward but difficult. The former champions are fighting to stay alive in the playoff race and need victories in all remaining matches while also depending on other results. Captain Ajinkya Rahane said the team is focused only on the immediate challenge.

“Taking one game at a time. We have to win three games and see what happens. We've been playing really good cricket, the last five games,” Rahane said.

KKR would also have preferred to chase under the conditions, with Rahane admitting there was moisture in the wicket.

“We were looking to field as well. There's a little bit of moisture. I don't think it'll change too much,” he added.

There was positive news for KKR ahead of the game as mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy returned to the playing XI after recovering from injury.

“Varun comes in, Varun is fit,” Rahane confirmed.

While GT continue to enjoy the luxury of momentum and balance with both bat and ball clicking together, KKR remain stuck in a desperate playoff scramble where every result could decide their fate.
