Mumbai Indians had a difficult start to their IPL journey in the first two seasons of the tournament. In the inaugural 2008 season, MI struggled early after Sachin Tendulkar missed several matches due to injury, losing its first four games.
Under Shaun Pollockâs captaincy, Mumbai bounced back well and remained in the race for the semi-finals until the final league match. However, a defeat against Rajasthan Royals saw them finish fifth in the points table.
The struggles continued in 2009 when the IPL was played in South Africa. Mumbai struggled to adjust to the conditions and failed to maintain consistency throughout the season. Despite having several star players, MI finished seventh after winning only 5 of 14 matches. The disappointing season later pushed the franchise to rebuild the team in the following years.
By 2016, Mumbai Indians had already become one of the strongest teams in the IPL, but the season showed how difficult it is to stay at the top consistently. The team had to shift their home matches from Wankhede Stadium to Vizag during the season, which affected their home advantage. Despite some strong individual performances, MI narrowly missed out on a playoff spot by just one win.
A similar story unfolded in 2018, which turned out to be one of the most disappointing seasons for the franchise. Mumbai lost several close matches, including multiple games in the final overs, which badly hurt their campaign.
Their playoff hopes ended after a surprise defeat to bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils in the final league match. Chasing 175, MI struggled against the spin attack of Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane during the middle overs. Ben Cutting gave the team hope with a late fightback, but Mumbai eventually lost by 11 runs, knocking the defending champions out of the tournament.
The 2021 season marked the beginning of a difficult phase for Mumbai Indians. The core group that helped MI win back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020 struggled for consistency and the team missed the playoffs after finishing level on points with Kolkata Knight Riders but behind on Net Run Rate.
Things got worse in 2022 after the mega auction reshaped the squad. MI lost their first eight matches and finished at the bottom of the table for the first time in franchise history.
Mumbai bounced back in 2023 despite missing Jasprit Bumrah, with youngsters like Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera helping the team reach Qualifier 2. However, the form did not continue in 2024, as the captaincy transition and inconsistent performances led to another 10th-place finish.
The 2025 season gave Mumbai Indians fans some hope after the team recovered well to reach the playoffs, but that hope did not carry over into 2026. MI struggled to find consistency throughout the campaign, especially with their bowling attack, while several senior players failed to deliver in important moments.
Although Ryan Rickelton emerged as a positive for the team, constant injuries and frequent changes to the playing XI made it difficult for Mumbai to settle on a strong combination.
For a franchise that has won five IPL titles, the recent trend will be a major concern. Since 2021, Mumbai Indians have gone through an inconsistent transition phase and have struggled to maintain the dominance they were once known for.
Heading into the next season, the management is expected to make important decisions as the team looks to rebuild and return to the top again.
