If the Orlando Magic are going to secure a shocking upset of the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in Game 5, Franz Wagner may have to watch from the sideline.

The fifth-year forward out of Michigan reportedly suffered a right calf strain late in the third quarter of Game 4, which Orlando eventually won 94-88 to set up tonight's potential closeout game in Detroit. Wagner had 19 points, five rebounds and four steals before his exit.

His physicality alongside Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr. is what's troubled the Pistons this series, so Orlando would certainly like him back sooner rather than later. Banchero is doubtful Wagner will return in Game 5, however.

“I don’t think we’re expecting Franz to play,” Banchero told The Athletic after shootaround in Detroit Wednesday morning. “A calf strain, you don’t want to mess around with that. So I don’t think that’d be very smart. But we’ve just got to come out (and have a mentality of) next man up. You know, we’ve had some guys come off the bench, play well, defend at a high level. So those guys have just got to step up and be ready to go.

“Obviously, we want Franz to be healthy. That’s the most important thing. But I’m confident that we’ve got guys that can step up.”

The caution is understandable considering Wagner's health this season. He missed 48 games after suffering a left high ankle sprain in December 2025, and the Magic sputtered to a 25-23 record without him.

Orlando is seeking to become the seventh No. 8 seed in NBA history to take down a top seed in Round 1. They've fought through injuries all season to reach this point, so don't count them out now.
