IPL 2026: Krunal Pandya, Nicholas Pooran involved in heated on-field exchange - Watch

Veteran safety Tony Jefferson is at risk of losing his starting role with the Chargers for the 2026 season due to the addition of rookie Genesis Smith. Jefferson, who had a strong 2025 season, faces competition from both Smith and RJ Mickens.
ESPN's Benjamin Solak recently did an exercise, highlighting 14 veterans who might be in jeopardy of a major role reduction this upcoming season, and among the crop was veteran safety Tony Jefferson.
Here is Solak's reasoning:
Jefferson was fending off only RJ Mickens last year. But in the fourth round of the 2026 draft, the Chargers added Arizona's Genesis Smith, a deep safety with speed for days. Smith simply covers far more ground than Jefferson does at this stage. While Mickens played well for a sixth-round rookie last season, Smith has superior range and ball tracking. If Smith gets the playbook under his belt quickly, it's hard to see either incumbent safety keeping him off the inside track for day one starts in the deep middle.
It's been quite the past couple of seasons for the 34-year-old after coming to Los Angeles. Jefferson is coming off a resurgent 2025 campaign where he recorded a career-high four interceptions. This came a season after he came on strong when injuries hit the safety room in 2024. Now, he returns for his third season with the Chargers after signing a one-year, $2 million deal.
While "Unc" has established himself as a fan favorite, there's no guarantee of him seeing the field as much as he did this past season. The primary threat to Jefferson’s snaps is 2026 fourth-round draft pick Genesis Smith. Smith has the desired traits to effectively defend the backend, possessing optimal range, ball skills and length. He will have to refine his tackling technique, but it's something that the coaching staff can work on.
Tony Jefferson is viewed as being on the hot seat due to the Chargers drafting rookie Genesis Smith, who has superior speed and range compared to Jefferson.
In the 2025 season, Tony Jefferson recorded a career-high four interceptions, showcasing a strong performance after previous injury struggles.
Genesis Smith is a rookie safety drafted by the Chargers in 2026, and his speed and coverage ability could challenge Jefferson and Mickens for a starting position.
