The Pilgrim softball team celebrates after a big out in the seventh inning of their improbable 10-9 comeback win over Westerly on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Energy was the key to the game and for the first five innings, Westerly had all of it. The Bulldogs struck for two runs in the first inning, led 4-1 after four and traded two runs with the Patriots in the fifth before Addison Pooleâs three-run home run gave them a 9-3 lead.

Dempsey reached on an error to start the inning and after a groundout, she scored on a double by Lia Wasilewski. After a single and a groundout, Hawes was intentionally walked but a bases-loaded walk brought in another run and made it 9-5 with two outs.
Up stepped Fratus, who jumped on the second pitch she saw and parked it over the center field fence to tie the game at nine.
Gabriella Santiago battled next and flicked a pitch on the outside half into right field for a single. Dempsey came up and ripped a ball to the gap in left center, bringing home Santiago with the go-ahead run. Santiago went out and closed out the game in the seventh, snapping Pilgrimâs three-game losing streak in the process.
