HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) â Itâs a season that Hazel Green players feel like has been years in the making.
The Trojans have made it to the baseball state semifinal for just the third time in school history, and itâs been a wild postseason run. Itâs the first year that Andrew Dennis has been in charge of the program, which features eight seniors, and the Trojans have gone to a game three in each of their first three playoff series.

âEver since we were little kids, the group coming up, seven or eight of us, it was always when we got to high school, itâs going to be a good group,â Senior Andrew Beaverson said. âA winning group that wants to play for each other and wants to win.â
âItâs surreal, every day we get to come work, and itâs just like I wouldnât have it any other way,â Beaverson said.
This is the first year since the 2022 semifinal team that has advanced past the first round of the playoffs.
âThis year, we knew coming into it that we had a lot better team than that, and we knew we needed to make it farther,â Senior Bryce Zimmerman said. âHeâs [Dennis] done a great job with us, really working with us. Heâs kind of had the mindset all year of we are going to make a deep run, and it feels like we are supposed to be here, and we are.â
Dennis, who won a state title at Huntsville High in 2011, knows how special it is to make it to a state semifinal.
âYou donât get to do this every year, so that means when you do get an opportunity to do it, youâve got to make the most of it. These guys, like Iâve said, have worked really hard to get here, and we donât want to let this moment go to waste,â Dennis said.
The Trojans will take on perennial powerhouse Hartselle in the semifinals. The Tigers are the defending 6A state champions and now hold the record for most state semifinal appearances in state history.

âThe atmosphere is going to be electric from what I know about Hartselle. I think they are going to show up; they may shut the city down. I think our people will travel well. Our guys will be ready for the moment,â Dennis said. âI think the biggest thing for us, one key is kind of getting settled into the game. If we can do something early to kind of help us out, I think thatâll help us ease into the game.â
âWe are going to have to play our game, not let the crowd noise get to us, play our game, be confident in ourselves,â Beaverson said. âDonât look at the front of their jersey, donât see Hartselle, just know that if we play our baseball, we can go on to the state championship next week.â
These Hazel Green seniors feel like getting a chance to play for a state title would be a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
âWinning a state championship thatâs kind of everyoneâs dream growing up, and weâve put so much work into it,â Zimmerman said.
