South Dakota State rallied to defeat St. Thomas 7-3, clinching the series. The Jackrabbits scored six runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory at Erv Huether Field.
BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) â South Dakota State scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 7-3, series-clinching victory over St. Thomas in the finale of a three-game Summit League baseball series Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits improved to 20-27 overall and 11-12 in league play. St. Thomas dropped to 10-36 overall and 7-16 in The Summit League.â
SDSU survived a slow start as the Tommies got out to a quick 2-0 lead. Tanner Recchio led off the game with a single and scored the first run of the game after the next three batters reached on two hit-by-pitches and a walk. The second run of the opening inning scored on a sacrifice fly.
Nolan Grawe put the Jackrabbits on the board with a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. It was the fifth homer of the season for the sophomore third baseman.
Jackrabbit starter Kaden Rylance settled down after a rocky first inning to keep St. Thomas off the board through the next three innings. However, the Tommies pushed their lead to 3-1 against SDSU reliever Ty Madison in the fifth inning, when Easton Fritcher was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an infield single by Matthew Maulik.
SDSUâs outburst in the sixth inning began with consecutive hit-by-pitches to Luke Jones and Dayton Franke, which were followed by a bunt single by Carter Taylor to load the bases against the Tommiesâ starter, Sam Stockman. Jones scored the first run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Nic Werk and Franke came across with the tying run on a throwing error on the back half of an infield single by .
The final score was South Dakota State 7, St. Thomas 3.
South Dakota State scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
After the game, South Dakota State's overall record improved to 20-27.

St. Thomas went to its bullpen, but Grawe greeted reliever Max Skilbeck with an opposite-field double down the left-field line that drove in both Taylor and Wroblewski. Nate Wachter made it back-to-back doubles with a gapper to left center and Luke Luskey bounced a run-scoring single through the right side to plate Wachter.
Madison worked three consecutive scoreless innings and was aided by inning-ending double plays in the seventh and eighth to earn his second victory of the series. He recorded a pair of strikeouts and did not walk a batter in four innings of one-run baseball.
Tristan Augedahl pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to close out the Jackrabbit win.
SDSU finished with a 12-8 advantage in hits, including three each by Wroblewski and Taylor. Grawe and Wachter each tallied two hits.
Zan Von Schlegell led St. Thomas at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double.
ON DECK
The Jackrabbits close the regular season with a four-game series at Omaha that will be played Wednesday through Saturday at Tal Anderson Field. The series opener on Wednesday has been designated as a makeup game from when the teamsâ scheduled series in early April in Brookings was called off due to inclement weather. All games are slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
