Jaden McDaniels faced foul trouble in Game 2, limiting his playtime and impacting the Timberwolves' performance. His absence was felt as Minnesota struggled, trailing significantly when he was off the court.
Jaden McDaniels picked up his third foul early in the second quarter of Game 2 Wednesday in San Antonio with the Wolves trailing by eight â down but far from out.
That whistle forced Minnesotaâs best perimeter defender to take a seat for the remainder of the half. By the time he returned to the floor to open the second stanza, the Timberwolves trailed by 24.
âThat hurt, that hurt,â Anthony Edwards told reporters of McDanielsâ absence. âYou need Jaden on the floor at all times when heâs available.
Minnesota lost McDanielsâ 20 minutes by six points Wednesday. It lost the other 28 by 32. In his limited time on the floor, the 6-foot-9 wing was again effective, going 6 for 10 from the floor while tallying four assists while allowing just 104.5 points per 100 possessions on the other end.
âYeah, Jaden was a bright spot for us,â Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters. â(Foul trouble) certainly derailed his night and we were never able to really benefit from a very good Jaden, which is important to us.â
Frankly, itâs everything. When McDaniels is on the floor, the Wolves can compete with anyone. When heâs not? Well, you witnessed the results Wednesday.
The Timberwolves are 4-15 this season against teams that finished the regular season with winning records when McDaniels either didnât dress or played fewer than 30 minutes and 24-13 when he did.
With McDaniels on the floor, Minnesota was able to win the bulk of its games contested even without Anthony Edwards this season, including a Game 6 victory over Denver. But when McDaniels missed games down the stretch of the regular season, the Wolves were largely a disaster.
Which is why itâs of vital importance for the two-way star to stay on the floor. Certainly, much of that responsibility falls on McDaniels himself.
âHim being off the court is going to hurt us every time. He knows it, we know it, the whole gym knows it. Their team knows it,â Edwards told reporters. âWhen he gets in foul trouble, they get happy. We need him on the floor to affect the game. He going to be better next game. He know he canât really foul, because weâre not going to win if heâs not on the floor.â
McDaniels' foul trouble led to him missing significant playing time, contributing to the Timberwolves losing by a larger margin when he was off the court.
In Game 2, McDaniels scored 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting and recorded four assists before foul trouble limited his playtime.
McDaniels is viewed as the Timberwolves' best perimeter defender, and his presence significantly impacts the team's defensive performance and overall success.
Anthony Edwards emphasized the importance of having McDaniels on the floor, stating that his absence hurt the team's chances in the game.

Wolves guard Mike Conley also cited the Spursâ knowledge of McDanielsâ impact, noting they made âa conscious effort to get him into foul trouble however they can.â
McDaniels walks a tightrope every game in this regard. Heâs the teamâs best defender. Opponents are shooting just 39% from the floor this postseason when guarded by McDaniels. But matching up with the best opposing perimeter player puts you in imminent danger of fouling.
Conley said the wing has to be âsmarterâ about selecting when to be aggressive and knowing when heâs beat and cannot contest.
But Finch insinuated thatâs also a team issue. He noted McDanielsâ early fouls Wednesday came in situations where McDaniels was left âon an islandâ defensively where there wasnât enough help defense around him, which left the stopper âvulnerable.â
There can be no such lapses. Keeping McDaniels on the floor is vital to Minnesotaâs success, and should be top of everyoneâs mind early in contests.
âHe knows what he means to our team, what he means to our defense, what he means to our offense,â Conley told reporters. âWe miss him a lot. You see when he did get a chance to play, heâs still able to create for himself, create for his teammates. So heâs got to find ways to keep him on the floor. We keep him on the floor, it gives us the best chance.â
