Jaire Alexander chronicles mental-health struggle after Packers exit
Former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander penned a heartbreaking story at The Players Tribune chronicling his decision to step away from football and the difficulties he faced physically and mentally after his departure from Green Bay.
Alexander, cut by the Packers prior to the 2025 season, struggled to stay healthy as he battled through a painful nagging knee injury. His first game with a new team, the Baltimore Ravens, went poorly to start the 2025 season, and after he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, he announced in November he was stepping away from football.
"People still sometimes ask me if I’m ever gonna come back and play," Alexander wrote in the Players Tribune. "And, you know what … I’ll never say never − I still work out, and the knee’s fine now, so I’m in good shape. But for me, right now, the most important thing really is just to be in a good place overall. To be happy."
Alexander said he first suspected his time in Green Bay was ending early in 2025 when the team dragged its feet fulfilling his request for an iPad to watch game film and get a jump on preparation for the next season.
"Not long after that, they got in touch about a potential pay cut," he wrote. "And, you know what … I understood. I was making a lot of money. I just got hurt. I had no problem with taking less money and having to prove my value again. But as we went back and forth, it just seemed like we could never get fully aligned. So now, all of a sudden, I’m needing to think about maybe playing for another team − something I’d never really considered in the past. I’d always thought of myself as a Packer for life, had always wanted to end my career in Green Bay."
Jaire Alexander decided to step away from football due to mental health struggles and the physical challenges he faced, including a nagging knee injury.
After leaving the Packers, Alexander's performance suffered, particularly in his first game with the Ravens, leading to his eventual decision to step away from the sport.
Jaire Alexander mentioned he would never say never about returning to football, but emphasized that his current priority is to be in a good place and happy.
After leaving the Packers, Jaire Alexander played for the Baltimore Ravens and was later traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Alexander said he understood the NFL is a business, but he was struggling coming to grips with the idea of no longer being a Packer.
"After I got cut," he wrote, "I tried to pretend like it was no big thing, but I never really fully dealt with all the emotions I was feeling, you know what I mean? What I’ve realized since, in working with my therapist, is that me leaving Green Bay … it was almost like a marriage coming to an end. And for someone who had devoted so much of his life to this game, that’s not gonna be something that happens and then you just move on like whatever. It lingers. And sticks with you. Or at least it did with me. And I can tell you point blank that I absolutely blamed myself in the moments when I’d think about that divorce."
Alexander said he went into his "own little shell" in the offseason, saying, "I felt like I’d let myself down, let the organization down, and let all the Packers fans out there down." He said the issues only compounded when he struggled in Baltimore and then couldn't play for the Eagles, with the pain in his knee preventing him from suiting up against his former team, Green Bay.
Alexander, 29, established himself as one of football's best cornerbacks during his tenure with the Packers from 2018-22, with a pair of second-team All-Pro nods. But he was limited to just seven games for Green Bay in both the 2023 and 2024 season, then played just two last year for the Ravens.
