You can binge as much game tape as you want, but you don't really feel how excruciatingly physical the Oklahoma City Thunder are on defense until you play it firsthand. The Phoenix Suns learned that lesson on Sunday as the 2026 NBA playoffs are underway.
The Thunder absolutely destroyed the Suns in a 119-84 Game 1 win. They open up their Round 1 series with a 1-0 lead. By halftime, you saw how galaxy-wide the talent gap is between the two teams.
The Thunder had the Suns looking like an elementary school offense. They shot an ugly 35% from the field and coughed the ball up a catastrophic 19 times. Through three quarters, they only mustered up 66 points — a laughingly low number for today's standards.
After being a play-in tournament hero, Jalen Green turned back into a pumpkin. He had just 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting. That tends to happen with perimeter-oriented scorers when they face the Thunder. A bevy of All-Defensive-caliber defenders like Lu Dort, Cason Wallace and makes it nearly impossible to drop 30-plus points.
Jalen Green expressed hope that the Suns would receive better calls and non-calls in their upcoming Game 2 against the Thunder.
The Suns struggled significantly in Game 1, losing 119-84 and shooting only 35% from the field while committing 19 turnovers.

After a Game 1 beating, Green talked about the Thunder's defense. And, sneakily enough, tried to leverage being under the microphone to get more favorable calls and non-calls for the Suns. We've seen that strategy used ad nauseam from opposing teams when they face OKC. Let's see if the 17th time is the charm.
"I feel like there's a couple of bad calls for how we're gonna be playing in the playoffs and how the refs allowed them to play," Green said. "I think it got to be both ways or just called both the same foul both ways. One or the other."
Through one game, the David-Goliath Round 1 series has played out how everybody thought it would. The Thunder should come away with a relatively low-stress advancement. But if the Suns want to make things interesting, they likely need to try to create advantages outside of just pure basketball.
Trying to influence the next batch of NBA referees to give them a friendlier whistle is a timeless strategy. But even I don't think a couple of calls going your way will make up a 35-point difference. Doesn't mean Green can't try, though. I respect the gamesmanship.
"You want to be aggressive at the end of the day," Green said. "We just got to figure that out."
