Jalen Reed has officially signed with Michigan basketball after transferring from LSU. The former four-star forward aims to make a significant impact if he can maintain his health.
On the heels of officially announcing two new signees via high school recruiting, Michigan basketball isn't done for the day when it comes to welcoming new players to its roster.
As Dusty May operates seemingly mostly in silence, he secured a surprise commitment early last week when former LSU forward Jalen Reed announced he was transferring to the Wolverines. Oft-injured while in Baton Rouge, the former four-star prospect has a lot of upside and could certainly make a big impact on the roster if he's able to stay healthy.
And on Tuesday, he officially signed with the maize and blue, officially making him a Wolverine.
Michigan had also gotten a commitment from Cincinnati center transfer Moustapha Thiam, but he's yet to be announced as having signed with the team.
David and Meredith Kaplan University of Michigan basketball coach Dusty May announced Tuesday (April 28) the addition of Jalen Reed, who has signed a Big Ten Scholarship Agreement to join the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season.
"Despite the challenges of the past two years, Jalen brings experience, toughness and a physical presence to our frontcourt," said May. "He's shown he can play at a high level, and having someone with that experience is important for our program."
A 6-10 forward from Jackson, Reed arrives in Ann Arbor after spending four seasons at LSU, with his final two seasons shortened by back-to-back season-ending injuries. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
During the 2025-26 season, Reed played in six games before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. He averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. In 2024-25, Reed started the first eight games before a season-ending right ACL injury. He averaged career bests of 11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 60.4 percent from the field.
Prior to playing 14 games over his final two seasons, Reed appeared in 65 games during his first two years in Baton Rouge. In 2023-24, he started 20 of 32 games and averaged 7.9 points and 4.1 rebounds. As a freshman in 2022-23, he played in 33 games with 11 starts.
Overall, Reed appeared in 79 career games with 39 starts for the Tigers, totaling 463 points (6.1 ppg) and 322 rebounds (4.1 rpg). He posted 19 career double-figure scoring games and 34 games with five or more rebounds.
Jalen Reed has a history of injuries while playing at LSU, which raises concerns about his durability moving forward.
Alongside Jalen Reed, Michigan basketball has also received a commitment from Cincinnati center transfer Moustapha Thiam, although he has not yet signed.
If healthy, Jalen Reed could bring significant upside and contribute positively to Michigan's basketball roster.
