If he plays tomorrow against Falkirk, James Forrest will have played his 565th match for Celtic, and if he has as similar impact as he did in the Scottish Cup semi-final last weekend, then that will be the perfect way to celebrate signing his new deal.

The long-serving winger signed on for his 18th season as a first-team player in the Hoops earlier this week and is fully focused on the remaining games of this season.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's game against Falkirk, James Forrest said: “At times this season I’ve come on and I’ve helped. I’ve been there to try and push the lads on who’ve been in my position, and I think they’ve done really well.

“We’ve got five league games, we’ve got the cup final as well so whatever the manager decides, I’ll be there and hopefully I can make an impact and help the team.

“I’m absolutely delighted, I spoke to the manager and Shaun from January, and the main thing is everyone’s focus has been the club and getting into the cup final and obviously focusing on the league.

“I’ve been here a long time, and I knew I wanted to keep playing and it was always going to just come down to the club, so I’m delighted.

'I’ve agreed to stay for another year, and hopefully I can just keep helping the team, keep contributing and keep fighting for trophies.'

It now looks more than ever that Forrest will join another elite group of Celts such as Billy McNeill and Bobby Lennox as being a one-club man.

Presumably that wasn’t on his mind all those years ago when he made a scoring debut against Motherwell at the end of the 2009/10 season.

In the time that followed he has now become the club’s most decorated player with 26 winner’s medals as well as scoring in every single season he has played.

He said: “In football there are so many twists and turns you never know what is going to happen the next week.

"So, to come through the youths here and play so many game for Celtic, win so many things, it’s been unbelievable.

“In the last couple of years, I’ve obviously taken notice when I’ve been told what stats and records I break, it has been good to hear, but hopefully there are a couple more to come and once I do retire, I can sit down and properly take it all in.”
