Jannik Sinner kept his Italian Open run moving on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Andrea Pellegrino in Rome.
The world No. 1 beat the world No. 155 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16, avoiding any major drama against his compatriot.
That win did more than send Sinner into the quarterfinals. It also put him one match away from breaking a Novak Djokovic record that once looked untouchable.

According to journalist Jose Morgado, Sinner’s win over Pellegrino moved him to 31 consecutive victories at Masters 1000 level.
That means he has now tied Djokovic’s all-time record, giving him the chance to stand alone if he wins his quarterfinal on Wednesday.
For any player, matching Djokovic in a consistency statistic is significant. For Sinner, doing it while still building his peak makes the run even more striking.
Sinner’s Masters dominance has already reshaped the sport this season. Earlier this month, he became the first man ever to win five consecutive Masters 1000 trophies after taking Madrid.
The Rome record chance now adds another layer to a season that is quickly becoming historic.
Sinner will face the winner of Andrey Rublev against Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarterfinal that could put him in tennis history again.
Rublev represents the more established threat as world No. 14, with the pedigree and weight of shot to test the Italian.

Basilashvili, ranked No. 117, arrives from a very different bracket of the sport, but his run has already shown he cannot be dismissed, as the 34-year-old Georgian knocked out top-10 star Ben Shelton in the tournament.
