It's been very unfortunate that the Chicago Cubs have dealt with the injuries they've had, including another season-ending injury to a pitcher. Right-hander Porter Hodge, who was dealing with a right elbow injury, will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Hodge, a reliever who has a 3.79 career ERA in Major League Baseball, would have been someone who could get outs at a very high level for this Cubs squad.

Looking at the future and what it means for the Cubs, while injuries are never ideal, it was actually good to hear what Jed Hoyer had to say.

Instead of making fans worry about not going out and making the right decisions after this, he said that while the focus is on Hodge and making sure that he's okay, the process has to be on what this team can do next.

“You just immediately feel sorry for the player, but then you just process like, ‘Who’s up next?’ ” Hoyer said, per the Sun-Times. “You have to move on quick mentally. It sounds cold-hearted, but that’s the nature of the job. The games go on, you have to find replacements.

“You have to take a look because you wouldn’t be doing your job if you didn’t,” Hoyer said. “A lot of guys go down these days. Guys throw so unbelievably hard, but we’ll do a deep dive and see if there’s a commonality to the injuries.”

The Cubs have had a rather average start to the year at 9-9. They're in fifth place in the National League Central, but I'm not exactly worried about being in last place in the Central right now. Ultimately, the standings are only decided by two games all around, so there isn't much to worry about yet.

However, if he doesn't go out and add the necessary arms, that could be a problem in the short and long term.
