SOUTH WEBSTER â Get them on, get them over, get them in.
And playing clean defense behind oneâs ace pitcher.
South Webster head coach Ryan McClintic refers to that as Jeep baseball â and on Thursday evening, South Webster certainly put on a clinic in playing its game, scoring in four of the five innings it came to bat and posting 11 runs on 12 hits between seven different Jeeps in an 11-1, five-inning triumph over SOC II Champion Northwest Thursday evening in South Webster.
Thursday eveningâs win in the village marked the Jeepsâ fifth consecutive victory for the No. 12-ranked team in the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) rankings in Division VII.
âOne-through-nine, the guys passed the baton around, and kept the line moving,â McClintic said. âThe thing about (Thursday) is that we had guys fill up the box score with hits and RBIs, but we didnât have any strikeouts either. Thatâs Jeep baseball. Getting bunts down, no strikeouts, quality at-bats, making pitchers work, looking comfortable in uncomfortable counts. Thatâs how we want to play and thatâs how we played.â
Northwest head coach Jason Nelsonâs group has again put together a successful season. Winners of 13 games and the co-champs of the SOC II alongside Symmes Valley, the Mohawks have rode a complete hitting lineup and an effective one-two pitching combination of Chase Kingrey and Braxton Burris to a 13-8 record. But with three errors and seven strikeouts through five innings of play on Thursday, Northwest simply couldnât get untracked in the nonconference affair.
âWe definitely didnât hit the ball well as a team and some things just didnât go our way,â Nelson said. âI think that mental preparation (Thursday) wasnât what it has been or needs to be at. Weâll work on that over the next couple of days, come back, and play our ball.â
South Webster wasted no time jumping out to an early lead as a productive batting order strutted its stuff from the get-go.
Leadoff hitter Hunter Barnard, who went 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored, shot a ball back up center field to reach base, stole second, and moved to third on a bunt single by Benaiah Andrews. This set up Brycin McClinticâs sacrifice fly to score Barnard, while Andrews, who moved up to second earlier in the McClintic at-bat on defensive indifference, advanced to third base.
The Jeeps then scored two runs with two out in the first inning of play, as South Webster third baseman Cole Bennett roped a ball over the head of Northwestâs Levi Shepherd in left field for an RBI double, then scored on an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Jacob McGraw, giving the Jeeps a 3-0 lead with which to play with.
âWe just wanted to do the little things to apply pressure,â McClintic said. âWe get Hunter on to start, he steals a base, Benaiah bunts him over to third after reaching on a bunt single, and Brycin gets our scoring started with that sac fly. Brycin hit some balls hard and didnât get rewarded for it in the hit column, but he starts our scoring off off with the sac fly and moves Benaiah up to third on the same play. That just gets us jump started on a big first inning, and with the pitching and defense that we have, we feel like we can get ahead of people and play our game even more.â

Along with Barnard, McGraw went 2-for-2 in the contest with his first-inning RBI single and two runs scored from the six-hole to also contribute in a dynamic offensive display.
âHunterâs been in the three-hole the last couple of years,â McClintic said when asked about Barnardâs efforts. âHe hadnât been the leadoff hitter ever, really. We put him there this year to get him more at-bats, honestly. He can bat anywhere. We donât really have a lot of guys that fit certain roles. We have nine guys that are similar. We just wanted to get him more at-bats and get him started. Heâs had a slow start to the season, but Iâm so proud of the way that heâs kept his head and never shown his frustrations and never let it wear off on his teammates and kept working.â
The South Webster defense also did its job. Playing behind the effective pitching of Jeep freshman Easton Large, who added to what has been a strong year with a complete game two-hitter, the Jeeps didnât do anything fancy but made all the routine plays while not committing an error in the contest.
Northwest put Chase Kingrey on in the top half of the first inning after Kingrey singled with one gone, and put Wesyn Lang on base after a two-out walk, but both players were picked off by Large.
Adding onto his effective pitching and pickoffs, Large also enjoyed a tremendous outing at the dish, going 3-for-4 himself with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in the game.
âClean defense,â McClintic said. âThatâs big time for our pitchers, and they can just go in there and attack hitters. Thatâs more likely to get you into pitcherâs counts and you donât have to nibble. You can pitch to weak contact and let the defense work, and thatâs what Easton did. Heâs been fantastic for us as a freshman and definitely doesnât look like one.â
South Webster then broke things open with a four-run third inning where Largeâs leadoff double, an error and a hit batter were followed by a two-RBI single by Jeep freshman Pierce Kreischer. Then, following an RBI sac fly by South Websterâs Sam Murphy, Brayden Barnard roped another well-hit baseball that dropped in left field for an RBI single.
By the time the third inning was completed, the Jeeps had sent eight batters to the plate in both the first and third frames, and had built a 7-0 advantage.
âWe werenât playing good baseball early in the year,â McClintic said. âI said, âThe only thing thatâs going to change it is to keep on working.â Work is the only thing that will change it. These guys have worked really hard every single day. Iâm just really happy for them.â
âWhen we play our ball, weâre as good as anyone,â Nelson said. âWeâve shown that time and time again. I canât blame our setback (Thursday) on physical ability. The guys can play and compete with anybody. Itâs just more about mental preparation there and just making mistakes that you canât make in a baseball game, especially against good teams.â
South Webster, who got singles from Large and McGraw in the fourth inning, then plated two more runs in the fourth on a passed ball and an RBI single by Murphy respectively to make it a 9-0 ballgame through four innings of work.
But Northwest junior Aidden Armbrister gave the Mohawks a jolt in the top of the fifth. Up as the leadoff batter in the inning, Armbrister swatted a big fly to left field on a 1-1 count to put Northwest on the board, cutting the deficit to a 9-1 margin.
âThe kid can absolutely smoke a baseball,â Nelson said. âI told him, âCongratulations, kid.â He took a year off last year, came back, fell back in love with the game of baseball and has been an amazing addition for us this year. He leads the team and is batting over .500. Hatâs off to the way he works and how much tenacity he shows when he plays. When everybody plays that way, good things happen, and when we donât, the results that we saw are the ones we get. Youâre going to win some and lose some, but we do it together.â
The homer proved to be of little consequence in the final result, however, as after giving up the homer, Large fanned the next three Northwest batters, two by way of the strikeout variety, to rack up seven punchouts in the game.
With the top of the order back up in the bottom of the fifth frame, Hunter Barnard led off the fifth with a single to center field again, stole second, and scored on an error. Then, following a hit batter, Large fittingly concluded matters with a double that banged off the right center field fence, scoring Andrews to finish matters off.
The win improved South Websterâs record to 11-6 ahead of what was the Jeepsâ final SOC III contest on Friday â a road bout at 16-2 Minford, the stateâs No. 3 team in the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Associationâs (OHSBCA) Division V realm.
âWeâre not worried about the stuff with the SOC,â McClintic said. âWe know thereâs stuff on the line, and we were in that situation last year. Weâre just trying to keep playing good baseball and keep building. I know that there are probably going to be some people paying attention to that game (on Friday). Weâre just going up there trying to play Jeep baseball and trying to win the next ballgame. Itâs the biggest one because itâs the next one.â
Northwest (13-8) will turn its attention to a nonconference matchup vs. Piketon at home on Monday before traveling to Portsmouth for its final regular season contest on Wednesday.
âWeâre proud of the boys,â Nelson said. âIâm always proud to see them progress and to win the SOC two years in a row is a big deal. Weâre aspiring to do more than that.â
