NHL analyst Jeff Marek has criticized the Vancouver Canucks front office after the dismissal of general manager Patrik Allvin. His comments came as the franchise continues to deal with the fallout of a disastrous 2025-26 season.
Allvin was dismissed after three and a half seasons, with Vancouver finishing last in the league. The team posted a 25ā49ā8 record and missed the playoffs again.
Speaking on the Sekeres and Price podcast, Marek questioned the logic behind the decision. He argued Allvin paid the price for moves influenced at higher levels.

āI think a good part of all of us look at this and say, the guy that didnāt make the decisions got fired for the decisions that were made that got the Vancouver Canucks into the place where we find them right now,ā Marek said. āIāve always told my kids, āGo to the dictionary and rip the word fair out because it doesnāt exist, and it just sets you up for disappointment.'ā
Marek added that this firing could be the first step in a broader restructuring of the teamās leadership.
āI think [this is] a pretty clear indication here that this is one of the first shoes to drop, dominoes to fall in what is going to be a restructuring of the Vancouver Canucks front office,ā Marek said.
The season itself exposed deep problems. Vancouver recorded a league-worst goal differential and struggled badly at home. Injuries to key players like Thatcher Demko and Filip Chytil disrupted any momentum. The mid-season trade of Quinn Hughes was the final nail in the coffin, signaling a rebuild.

Vancouver Canucks' President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford at PPG PAINTS Arena
President Jim Rutherford admitted the decision was difficult but necessary. He stated the organization needed a new direction despite his respect for Allvin.
āItās unfortunate, heās a friend of mine,ā Rutherford said. āPatrik is a great hockey guy, but we felt it was time to make a change and give somebody else the opportunity to sit in that GMās chair and make the decisions going forward.ā
Despite one strong season under Allvin, inconsistency has been the main highlight of his tenure. The team made major trades, including moves involving Bo Horvat and J.T. Miller. Performance dips from players like Elias Pettersson added to the decline.
Marekās criticism reflects wider concern around the organization. The Canucks now face a critical offseason. Leadership decisions in the coming months will show how the team can recover from one of the worst seasons in its history.
