That award reflected his extraordinary impact as a shot-blocker, rebounder, passing-lane disruptor and contesting presence across the San Antonio Spursā defence.
Yet former NBA champion Jeff Teague believes the best defender he has ever seen is another DPOY contender, not Wembanyama.

Speaking on the Club 520 podcast, Teague made a bold case for Ausar Thompson, who was also among the DPOY contenders alongside Chet Holmgren.
āHeās the best defender I literally ever seen, bro. I aināt going to lie to you,ā he began by saying (via NBA Courtside).
Teague then suggested Thompsonās limited offensive game makes his defensive value even more striking.
āBecause he literally canāt do nothing on offense. Bro, you see the blocks, Tony Allen used to lock up, but this nāā be blocking sā.
Jeff Teague did not specify the name of the current NBA star he believes is the best defender.

According to SofaScore, Thompson has 22 blocks in the playoffs, the third-highest total so far. He also ranks sixth for rebounds.
Teagueās point about Thompsonās limited offence is supported by the numbers, with his scoring impact still modest during the postseason.
He is averaging 8.3 points per game in the playoffs, slightly down from the 9.9 points he produced during the regular season.
His best postseason scoring night came in Game 3 defeat against the Magic, when he had 17 points. Since then, he has not scored more than 11.
