Matt Jennings endorses Haden Deaton as the new boys basketball coach for Logansport, praising his leadership potential and support from his wife, Haley. Jennings, who is getting married soon, also expressed interest in having Deaton as an assistant coach in the future.

Former Logansport star Matt Jennings has given his former Grace College teammate Haden Deaton a strong endorsement following Deatonās hiring as the Berriesā new boys basketball coach.
āFor one, I think Hadenās going to do a great job,ā Jennings said. āI do think heās the man for the job. I think just as far as all the change that has taken place in the program over the last really letās call it decade since Iāve gotten out of school, weāve obviously have gone through a few different coaches. Weāve changed conferences. Weāre just in a different place and in a different position than we were a decade ago. But I just canāt think of a better person to lead the program moving into the future than Haden.
āAnd I will tell you, at least in my experience, a lot of the great coaches that Iāve been around have had great partners by their side. And I think Haley Deaton, who is Hadenās wife who also works for the school corporation, I just canāt think of a better person thatās gonna be able to support and back him as he has to tackle whatās gonna be a big challenge ahead. Iām really excited for the future of the program.ā
Having a good spouse is at the top of Jenningsā mind as he is set to get married on Friday to Sophia Rozzi, who is a Logansport grad herself.
Jennings said heās talked to Deaton about joining him on the sidelines someday as an assistant coach. But for now the timing does not work out with his upcoming marriage and the fact that he is now the owner and primary lead financial advisor at Workman & Associates in Logansport.
āAs much as I would enjoy being a part of where the program is heading in the direction that heās gonna take it, Iām actually getting married here very soon. The last couple of years I have taken over the leadership and the ownership of a financial planning firm here in town. And so just unfortunately the timing in my life is just not going to be able to make it work,ā he said. āI just operate in one way. And if Iām gonna do something, Iām gonna be all in on it. And unfortunately, I would feel like with some of my other obligations outside of the basketball world, Iād be one foot in, one foot out. And I just donāt want to do a disservice to Haden and his other coaches, and I certainly wonāt do a disservice to the players. And so I wonāt rule that idea out for forever, but unfortunately right now, just as far as timing goes, itās just not gonna be something that Iām gonna be able to make work given the other commitments Iāve taken on at this stage of my life.ā
While the 2017 graduates were rivals in their high school playing days with Jennings at Logansport and Deaton at McCutcheon, playing on some of the best teams in the history of both schools, they were teammates and roommates at Grace College. They both eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in college and were at the forefront of the Lancers becoming an NAIA powerhouse in recent years.
āHaden and I played on the same AAU program in high school, so we shared a couple of the same coaches in our AAU circuit. We played against each other in high school. And so I know a lot about Coach (Rick) Peckinpaugh and he knows a lot about Coach (Pat) Skaggs. And obviously we played for the same college program,ā Jennings said. āSo we have shared a lot of the same coaches, a lot of the same mentors, a lot of the same I think experiences in the basketball world. And so itās funny, I think as far as a lot of the things that I would do and how I think about the game of basketball and how youāre supposed to teach the game and coach the game, I think Haden is gonna bring a lot of that to the table. But I think itās gonna be highlighted by toughness, a competitive spirit and a discipline that I think heāll bring to the program from day one.ā
Former Logansport star Matt Jennings endorsed Haden Deaton following his hiring.
Jennings believes Deaton is the right person for the job and highlights his leadership potential and the support from his wife, Haley.
Deaton faces the challenge of leading a program that has undergone significant changes over the past decade, including coaching transitions and conference changes.
Jennings has discussed the possibility of Deaton joining him as an assistant coach, but current commitments prevent this from happening immediately.

One of Jenningsā former coaches, Matt Lange, recently stepped down as the Berriesā head coach. Deaton was the JV coach under Lange the last four seasons.
āI would be remiss not to tell Coach Lange congrats as well,ā Jennings said. āA lot of people donāt realize that Matt Lange was actually my groupās seventh grade coach at Lincoln Middle School years ago. And he obviously came up to the high school program as we did. And so he was just a big part of what we did being on the coaching staff years ago. And I think over the last decade heās just had a big impact on the program that I think goes far beyond just the win-loss column. And I think as far as his impact on me and a lot of my teammates, I think thatās not going away anytime soon. So I just wanted to say congrats to Coach Lange.
āAnd obviously his wife Lori has been a big part of what theyāve done over the last four years as in regards to just a lot of change. Obviously he came in after a couple of quick coaching changes. He came in during a period where we changed conferences, thereās just been a lot of change in the program over the last several years. And I think Coach has done a great job, and I think heās gonna do a great job handing the program off to Haden.ā
One of the things Deaton mentioned that made the job so appealing to him is Logansport is now one of the biggest Class 3A schools in the state after being one of the smallest Class 4A schools for nearly three decades since multi-class basketball was enacted.
One can only wonder what Jennings and his teams could have accomplished in Class 3A, or for that matter, his older sisters Whitney, Rachel and Shannon or older brother Jared.
Jennings noted that in the 2016-17 season alone the Berries defeated the Class 3A state runner-up that year, Twin Lakes, and the defending Class 3A state runner-up, Evansville Bosse, let alone their wins against Class 4A teams like McCutcheon, Lawrence North and Noblesville.
āI think thatās always a wonder because you still remember every game no matter how many years removed, you still just remember about every single game youāve ever played, some of those thoughts and memories donāt go away,ā Jennings said. āBut I think about obviously just being in a different class now, the landscape has changed a little bit and I think thereās a lot of opportunity there. I think about my senior year, Twin Lakes was runner-up in the 3A State Finals and they had a really good and talented class that was in the same group as my group coming up. And so they were always really competitive in the state tournament.
āSo I think thereās a lot of opportunity there and I think about even my uncle Kent Adamsā teams over at Twin Lakes, theyāve had years where theyāve had some really talented groups. Theyāve had some years where they werenāt always the most talented, but I think heās always found a way to give him a chance to win the conference and try to win the sectional. And I think moving into the future, itās hard for me to not think that weāre not gonna have a fighting chance every year, which itās got to be exciting for the kids that are coming up in the ranks and coming up in the program as far as the future goes.ā
As far as their head-to-head matchups, Deatonās Mavericks went 4-1 against Jenningsā Berries and won three straight sectional titles in Deatonās three-year varsity career. But the Berries did win the last matchup at McCutcheon en route to an historic NCC title, just their fourth in their 98 years in the league and the first in 40 years.
āI think my time as an athlete shared with and against Haden can be defined with one word and thatās competition,ā Jennings said. āWeāre both competitors. No matter what weāve done as far as on the basketball court or other things, weāve been competitive and I think thatās what drove a lot of our success. But itās funny, there was about a month ago, maybe a little longer than that when we had the mascot night for Felixās birthday. And they had that alumni event and that gala. And so I had to call Haden Deaton to get a jersey to wear to that event. And itās funny how this McCutcheon Maverick is letting me in my own locker room here at the Berry Bowl. And so Haden and I are just laughing and just kind of shaking our heads as that happened. But itās funny how this kind of has all come full circle as far as not only being rivals on the court but then teammates playing AAU ball together and college ball together, and obviously roommates. And so itās just been really cool and really special.
āAnd thatās where I think people around here understand it, but high school basketball is just a special thing. Really for me, itās the last time you get to officially play with your childhood best friends in front of your hometown. And so I just canāt think of a better person that understands the importance and the history surrounding that. And I think as far as our competition and rivalry on the court, I think heās gonna continue to just build on that and create his own moments and memories and rivalries in the future. And the kids and the players that heās gonna have are gonna be a part of that. And theyāre just gonna find a lot of success along the way. I am very confident in that.ā
