Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jesus Luzardo had a simple explanation for Wednesday night's home horror show.
In 5.2 innings, Luzardo allowed the visiting Chicago Cubs to generate nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and continued the pitching staff's inconsistencies.
"I just didn't execute," Luzardo said after the 11-2 loss at Citizens Bank Park, as reported by The Morning Call.
Luzardo, who surrendered at least five runs in three of four starts, isn't the only one.
Burdened by up-and-down pitching, the Phillies (8-10) have dropped three of four home series this season.
They dropped three home series in all of 2025.
Since signing a five-year, $135 million extension March 10, Luzardo opened the regular season with a 1.46 WHIP in 22.2 innings. He has 30 strikeouts and appears in no danger of losing his spot in the rotation.
"Everybody's going to have some bad outings," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.
Emerging unscathed during the first two innings Wednesday, the Cubs yielded three runs in the third, two in the fifth on Nico Hoerner's home run and four in the sixth off Luzardo (1-3), whose earned-run average ballooned to 7.94 after four starts.
With the Phillies off Thursday, Taijuan Talker (1-2) also possesses an elevated ERA (7.36).

With the Atlanta Braves set to open a weekend series in Philadelphia on Friday, the Phillies possess a perplexing pitching staff. They opened the campaign first in ground-ball percentage (49.9) and second in strikeouts per nine innings (10.36) and walks per nine innings (2.66).
The Phillies' ERA? It ranked No. 26 (4.92).
Luzardo's rotation spot may not be threatened yet, but after enduring only four starts last season, in which he allowed five or more runs. The Phillies could use that consistency, especially at home.
