The New York Jets met with free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson to discuss a potential role as their backup for the 2026 season. However, reports indicate that no immediate deal is in place.
The New York Jets hosted a meeting with veteran free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson on Monday, according to multiple reports.
Per The Athletic, the Jets are considering Wilson as their No. 2 quarterback behind Geno Smith for the 2026 season. ESPN reports that “nothing is imminent” between the two sides.
Wilson is a 10-time Pro Bowler who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks after the 2013 season but is far from his Seahawks prime. He made 11 starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 and played in six games including three as a starter as a backup for the New York Giants in 2025.
Wilson, 37, has remained a free agent since the expiration of his one-year contract with the Giants from last season.
Smith projects as the Jets’ starting quarterback after they acquired him in a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders for a late-round pick swap in March. The Raiders parted with Smith after a disappointing 2025 campaign in which he led the NFL with 17 interceptions. The Raiders finished tied for the worst record in the NFL, netting the No. 1 pick in the draft that they used to select Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
Smith, 35, returns to the Jets team that drafted him for his 13th NFL season. The Jets also selected Clemson quarterback Cade Clubnik in the fourth round of last week’s NFL Draft.

Smith is not New York’s quarterback of the future, and whomever sits behind him on the depth chart could ultimately see playing time if Smith falters next season. Wilson, for now, is a candidate to take on that role.
